Required:
Two years experience in either a museum or other work experience in a job requiring performance of tasks listed below.
Duties/Responsibilities
The art preparator is responsible for performing a wide variety of tasks related to art museum collections and exhibitions, according to accepted art museum procedures and policies.
45% - EXHIBITION PRODUCTION
--Installs, lights, labels, and dismantles exhibits. Mounts art objects on walls, tables, cases, or cabinets. Installs artwork in various locations outside the museum building. Requires standing up to 4 hours at a time and as much as 7 hours a day during preparation periods. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds alone or more with assistance from others or with equipment.
--Paints, cleans, and repairs gallery walls, cases, baffles, benches, and other exhibit material.
--Prepares, mounts, and installs labels and signage.
--Researches, constructs, and finishes display cases, mounts, vitrines, baffles, walls, didactic panels, and other exhibition-related furniture and accessories. Designs and fabricates special installation mounts and equipment when needed.
--Advises part-time and temporary workers involved in preparation and installation.
--Receives, unpacks, packs, and ships art objects for loan and for traveling exhibitions.
30% - MATTING AND FRAMING
--Mats and frames art objects; constructs and repairs frames; designs and produces or oversees production of picture frame molding.
10% - EXHIBITION PLANNING
--Participates in regular staff meetings and exhibition planning meetings.
--Researches installation procedures on request and advises museum staff in such areas as installation design and techniques, framing, lighting, and related costs.
--Collaborates with exhibits coordinator, registrars, curators, designers and others regarding all aspects of exhibition production: Informs museum staff of potential problems related to specific projects and consults with registrars and curators concerning best methods for care and handling of art objects.
--Collaborates with museum staff, interns, colleagues, and public: Shares knowledge and expertise in areas of lighting, crating, packing, proper handling, preparation, and display of artworks. Shares in setting work schedule.
5% - ART DELIVERY AND PICK-UP
--Picks up and delivers artworks, both locally and long-distance. Loads and unloads trucks.
5% - SHOP MAINTENANCE
--Maintains exhibits during viewing periods, including cleaning cases, dusting, and general upkeep.
--Maintains upkeep and housekeeping in wood shop, frame shop, and related areas.
--Orders and maintains inventories of necessary supplies. Makes recommendations regarding shop equipment needs. Establishes and maintains contact with suppliers of materials and equipment. Searches for competitive prices when researching materials and equipment.
5% - GALLERY MAINTENANCE
--Performs minor conservation, following established guidelines and in consultation with registrars and/or conservator on works of art and on frames.
OTHER DUTIES:

Housed in a striking stainless steel and brick building designed by architect Frank Gehry, the Weisman Art Museum offers an educational and friendly museum experience. The museum's collection features early 20th century American artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Marsden Hartley, as well as a diverse selection of contemporary art. A teaching museum for the University of Minnesota and the community, the Weisman provides a fresh, engaging arts experience through an array of [programs and a changing schedule of exhibitions. There's always something interesting to see and do at the Weisman.
