Woodworker Position OVERVIEW:
This position reports to the Head of the Preparation Department.
Applies specialized skill to the design and fabrication of metal and plastic or wood projects. Knowledge and experience with painting techniques, paints and finishes. Works closely with preparators and other staff, vendors and consultants to ensure the quality and timely delivery of projects. Ensures the proper and safe operation of tools and equipment used in the trade. Trains and oversees staff using tools and equipment and advises on material selection and fabrication methods and procedures. Works closely with supervisor on safety policies and procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Applies advanced knowledge of woodworking trade to the design and fabrication of projects using a variety of materials, including metal, plastic, and/or wood
* May design and fabricate tools, molds, forms, cabinet and showcase hardware, storage cabinets, scientific apparatus components, mounts and other metal or plastic devices
* May design and fabricate storage cabinets, tables, showcases, work benches and other display, storage and working furniture and other wood products
* May be responsible for painting projects, paints and finishes
* Works with Preparators, other Museum and Getty staff, outside vendors and consultants on fabrication projects
* Assists Lead Preparator in establishing fabrication project priorities, developing project schedules, and fabricating projects * Researches and recommends or orders materials, supplies and equipment
* Sets up, maintains and keeps inventory of shop tools and machinery
* Maintains paint shop supplies and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* High School/GED with certification from a technical/trade school desirable
* Apprenticeship plus 5 years custom machining or woodworking experience
* Proficient in hand and machine tool operations plus CAD and CAM
