Thanks to its groundbreaking role promoting the work of artists of African descent, The Studio Museum in Harlem has earned an international reputation as a leader in the contemporary arts arena. Looking towards its 50thanniversary in 2018, the Museum will be introducing new platforms for artists and scholars, continuing a long tradition dedicated to discourse and advocacy. Candidates have the unique opportunity to join the Museum during this watershed moment.


The Studio Museum in Harlem is now accepting applications for a Part-Time Art Handler.

The Art Handler will work 3 days for a total of 24 hours per week. However, during installation periods and changes of exhibitions the Art Handler will work full time (5 days, 35 hours per week).

The Art Handler will work directly under the supervision of The Studio Museum’s Exhibitions Manager and the Registrar. S/he might occasionally work closely with and receive direction from the Museum’s Curatorial Staff, Conservators and other Registrars.

The ideal candidate must have:
· A high school diploma and/or college degree (preferable) in an arts related field.
· Previous paid experience as an Art Handler in a museum or gallery
· Knowledge and experience with archival and conservation materials; understanding of gallery maintenance, cleaning and presentation
· Knowledge of framing techniques
· Experience with installation, de-installation, packing and unpacking, shipping and storage of artworks in all media
· Ability to work with hand and power tools, to lift, handle and carry heavy, fragile objects(up to 50lbs), and be comfortable on ladders, scaffolds and/or scissor lifts
· Experience in wall repair, painting, and other light construction work
· Ability to manage multiple projects at once

Basic computer skills are required.

Annual compensation and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.
