Collections Management Technician
Collections Management – 2 positions available (1 Regular Full Time, 1 Temporary Full Time mid Sept through Dec 2010)

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is the premier encyclopedic museum of visual arts in the western United States. Established in 1965 as an independent institution, the museum has assembled a collection of approximately 100,000 works from around the world, spanning the history of art from ancient times to the present. Through its far-reaching collections and extensive public programming, the museum is both a resource to and a reflection of the many cultural communities and heritages in Southern California. The museum draws nearly 1 million visitors annually and has 85,000 adult members and 60,000 child members. It is accredited through the American Association of Museums.

Reporting to the Collections Management Supervisor, the Collections Management Technician is responsible for day-to-day monitoring, retrieval, placement and subsequent tracking of artworks in storage according to archival standards. The Collections Management Technician works closely with staff from Art Preparation & Installation, the Registrar’s Office, Conservation and Curatorial departments.

Some duties include: houses and re-houses artworks in storage, including framing/unframing or mounting artworks as needed; consolidates and organizes art storerooms as needed; assists with finding appropriate space in storerooms for incoming and outgoing works of art; handles the relocation of individual objects and whole collections: both physical movement and updates in MIMSY; performs various tasks related to the organization, cleanliness and maintenance of storerooms.

The qualified candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies or related field and have two to four years of experience in museum collection management, art preparation, handling and installation, museum registration, conservation or carpentry. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Working knowledge of computers, spreadsheets, database and word processing software applications is required.
