Job Summary
Preparators work in collaboration with the registrar, curatorial, conservation and exhibition design departments to ensure that art objects are safely handled, displayed, stored and shipped. They are responsible for art installation in exhibitions and permanent galleries, art handling in storage vaults and at offsite locations, as well as packing and crating art for transport.
Essential Functions
Installs and deinstalls art in permanent galleries and changing exhibition spaces.
Works with curators, registrars and exhibition designer on method of display, placement, and lighting of
artwork.
Prepares art and casework for display; duties may include matting, framing, mountmaking, painting,
lighting, Marvelsealing, fabric wrapping and carpentry.
Maintains appearance of permanent gallery spaces including wall repair, paint, lights and labels.
Works with registrars on exhibition installations, collection inventory and documentation, art storage
projects and packing/crating art for shipment.
Maintains the organization of tools, supplies and all workspaces with fellow preparators.
Transports art and other museum assets by truck.
Work Environment
Most work is indoors in the main preparation area, climate-controlled galleries, carpentry shop and storage areas.
Outdoor activities include installation and cleaning of outdoor sculpture, transport of crates and casework offsite
and pick up/delivery of artwork by museum truck.
Physical Demands
Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs and moving one’s whole
body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, squatting, grabbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending,
stretching, twisting, reaching and handling of materials and art objects in the course of completing work
assignments.
Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone and more with assistance from others.
Ability to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and scissor lift.
Knowledge-Skills-Abilities
Knowledge of procedures for moving two and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes and weights.
Knowledge of standard tools, practices and methods used in art installation.
Very detail oriented with a sense of craftsmanship that is evident in finished products.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Excellent time management skills.
Ability to work as a team member.
Ability to self manage and to meet deadlines when working independently.
Problem solving skills in a wide variety of situations.
Ability to hold, position, and operate hand, air and power tools.
Ability to use personal protection equipment to protect eyes, nose and skin, including wearing safety protective
equipment (e.g., hardhats, safety goggles, earplugs, safety vest) as required.
Compensable Qualifications
High school graduate; experience in an area of visual arts (preferred)
Minimum 1 year experience in art handling and exhibition installation in a museum or gallery setting
required. Fabrication or advanced woodworking skills are considered in lieu of installation experience.
Demonstrated excellent manual and organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to focus on tasks and
willingness to consistently follow directions and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to work alone as well as in a team environment.
Basic computer skills
License/Certification Required
