Position Summary:

Working under the direction of the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Registrar, and Chief Preparator, the Preparator has primary responsibility for installation and de-installation of exhibitions, and on all matters pertaining to the safe handling of objects in the collection and on loan to the Museum.


Responsibilities:

Collections & Exhibitions

Assist in the installation and de-installation of exhibitions, which includes but is not limited to:
Receive and unload crates and deliver to appropriate storage and/or galleries
Unpack and repack exhibition crates
Assist in construction of exhibition cases as needed
Prepare galleries for new exhibitions including proper repairing and painting of gallery walls
Hanging and moving of art objects (all media) throughout the Museum
Assist in the installation of labels, text panels, vinyl, and signage throughout gallery spaces

Assist in the lighting of, and the maintenance of lighting, in each exhibition
Mat and frame artwork and/or unframe artworks as needed
Clean, maintain and insure proper order to exhibition spaces, art storage spaces, and workshops
Clean, maintain, and insure proper order to exhibition galleries, which includes but is not limited to:
cleaning glass and/or plexi
dusting frames, pedestals, and sculptures

Pick up and deliver artwork as arranged by Registrar and/or Curator, from and to artists, collectors, lenders, donors and dealers
Assist the Registrar in maintaining proper conditions and procedures to insure safety of artwork in permanent collection and on loan
Responsible for the supplies, organization and maintenance of the preparation area
Assist in training staff on use of equipment and professional museum practice as it relates to painting and construction

Administration

1. Attend staff meetings
2. Be knowledgeable of the Museum’s collection and exhibition policies
3. Maintains good working knowledge of the Museum’s policies, procedures, educational practices and ideologies
4. Must have knowledge of safety procedures when operating shop equipment.
5. Be knowledgeable of and practice the AAM Code of Ethics and Museum Code of Ethics
6. Perform other duties deemed appropriate by the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Registrar and/or the Executive Director


Functional Relationships:

Reports to the Chief Preparator. Supervises technicians and contract personnel as required. Works closely with the Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Registrar, and staff in Building & Grounds Department. This position is classified at Exempt.

Qualifications:

B.A. in Studio Arts, Art History, or related field. Minimum five years experience with an art museum or gallery. Be extraordinarily sensitive to the correct handling and maintenance of artwork. Competent in light carpentry, wall preparation, and painting. Must have knowledge of proper archival materials and techniques; must be able to lift 70 lbs., must have exemplary driving record and be able to drive a rental truck; knowledge of computer programs; strong organizational skills; ability to work in a fast paced environment with strict deadlines. Valid Florida driver’s license within three months of employment.
