Mount Fabrication Technician – Installations & Packing
Working closely with curatorial and conservation departments, the Mount Fabrication Technician designs and fabricates mounts for all objects in the Museum's collection, including those that travel to other museums for loan purposes. This includes display systems for objects that require special attention such as objects that cannot stand on their own, objects vulnerable to theft or damage, and objects that have specific aesthetic requirements. Materials used include, but are not limited to: brass, bronze, copper, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, wood, acrylic, and ethylene foams. Soldering, welding, braising, and tap and die are the essential processes in the fabrication of mounts. As a member of the Installations and Packing team, this position may also assist the art handling team as needed.
This position requires strong metal working skills, particularly soldering and welding. Candidates must have knowledge of and experience working with a variety of metal types, as well as other materials such as plastic and wood. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work across departments to achieve both aesthetic and safety goals is essential. Successful candidates will be able to work independently, and can prioritize and complete jobs with tight deadlines. Experience with art handling and mount making for museum displays preferred. Knowledge of various shop equipment including table, radial arm and band saw a plus.
