Job DescriptionPosition Summary
Reporting to the Lead Preparator, the Preparator assists in the transportation, installation, and deinstallation of all artwork for featured and permanent exhibitions both inside the museum and on the museum grounds. This position will assist with maintenance of exhibition spaces, shop areas and storage areas. The Preparator will be required to dust, clean glass, change gallery lights and assist in pest monitoring. The Preparator works in conjunction with other members of the Preparation department.
Principal Responsibilities (Essential Functions)


Acts as Project leader to oversees planning aspects of specific projects in varying disciplines of collections care and exhibitions preparation; Examples of these disciplines would be packing/storage; lighting design, and matting/ framing. This would include management of the project, scheduling, contractor oversight, purchasing, and maintaining inventory of the necessary materials

Assists with all loading and unloading of art trucks in a timely and efficient manner

Assists in unpacking and packing of artwork and exhibition furniture

Assists registrars with the condition reporting of all incoming and outgoing artwork, objects, and artifacts

Assists with the arranging of objects in storage spaces to await exhibitions

Assists in the preparation of housing for artwork, objects, and artifacts for storage and transportation purposes

Assists in the safe moving and handling of art objects of all mediums throughout the museum facility

Assists with all aspects of installation and collection rotations in the permanent gallery spaces, temporary gallery spaces, and outdoor sculpture trail

Assists with installation of exhibition signage and wall didactics

Assists with gallery lighting

Assists with matting and framing of artwork

Maintains the care and cleanliness of all casework and platforms throughout the museum facility on a daily basis

Assists in maintaining an inventory list of tools and materials for the Museum Prep shop

Assists in maintaining an organized, clean, and functional working prep space

Assist with Pest management

Act as courier, as assigned, to accompany exhibitions and loans worldwide

Completes all additional assigned tasks and requests for the general support of the Preparation Department and Museum functions

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and Traits:


Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Skilled in handling all mediums of art and familiar with installation technique

Basic working knowledge of hand tools and math applications

Knowledge and interest in Art and Art History

Work Experience:


Minimum 2-3 years of museum or gallery experience (installation preferred)

In regard to education and experience, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will satisfy the minimum requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:


Valid Driver’s License

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Physical demands: In the work environment described below, position requires verbal and written conversation with others, sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, strenuous lifting/moving objects up to 50 pounds, and use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Position requires use of hands to safely handle and move collection objects according to the most current approved museum standards. Position periodically requires standing for prolonged periods of time. Vision abilities required by the job include close vision.

Work Environment: The majority of work will be performed in an office or museum gallery environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Work requires periodic transport of packed art works and exhibition furniture and equipment to and from local off-site storage facilities. Position requires some independent overnight travel. On 24-hour emergency call by telephone and/or cell phone required. Incumbent must meet a flexible work schedule including evenings, and weekends and available on-call for emergencies.
