Just as the design of crate interiors and interior containers can determine how the objects they contain are initially handled, there is a relationship between crate design and the tools and methods that will be used to move them.

ABOUT PALLET TRUCKS AND CRATE DESIGN

    Stability and Efficiency
Materials moved on pallets usually create a rough cube that will fit two-wide on most trucks and in containers. They effectively use the space and are not prone to tipping. When configuring crates that have multiple objects one recommended approach is to design them to have a broad footprint and a low center of gravity to enhance stability. This type of crate is a natural to be moved by pallet truck.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) asset tracking has made its way into art handling. Fine Art Shipping began working with it in early 2009, and we are in a fine-tuning stage with the system. RFID shares barcoding’s facilitation of electronic databases in inventory maintenance, but takes the concept a step further. The idea is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of our storage maintenance operations by eliminating several points of potential human error and object handling. And apart from the nearly completed updating of our existing storage with RFID, it has already provided savings on some jobs by streamlining every stage in tracking our custody of objects - up to and including billing.

I had the very fortunate opportunity this year to work closely with Japanese art packers and shippers Nippon Express Co. Ltd. in conjunction with the Museum’s summer exhibition Lords of the Samurai: Legacy of a Daimyo Family (displayed at the museum June 12 – September 20, 2009). The Asian Art Museum borrowed over 160 artworks from the Hosokawa family collection housed in the Eisei Bunko Museum in Tokyo, the Kumamoto Castle and the Kumamoto Prefectural Museum in Kyushu. The artworks included full suits

Held on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles, CA.

This is a summary of the one-day Art Handling Workshop that PACIN co-sponsored on Friday November 14th at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

The workshop was co-sponsored and organized by RC-WR (Registrar’s Committee Western Region), CAM (Californian Association of Museums), CERA (California Exhibition Resources Alliance) and PACIN. Sharing the organization of the Workshop made for an efficient, cost effective and well promoted event. In total 131 delegates attended. In initial planning we were expecting 50-75 delegates.

Michael Van Hook scanning barcodes on packed boxes

Completed in June of 2004 and spanning a 5 year period, over 800,000 objects were documented, packed and relocated at the National Museum of American Indian. This collection is now one of the most thoroughly documented collections of its type and size due to the digital imaging component integrated into the move process. It is also one of the more accessible collections due to the addition of a barcoding system that was also integrated into the move project.

At the National Gallery, London, we routinely used to place foam blocks on the floor and manually lower the containers onto these pads. Depending on size and weight, additional staff would be required to ‘foot’ the container to avoid it slipping out at the bottom as the case tilts. Typically, these operations will tie-up five technicians

This is a report to members of PACIN who were unable to attend this event. Below is a list of the papers presented at the event followed by my typically windy account of what transpired (impatient folk please just skip to the end for the brass tacks).
