A contemporary art gallery in Chelsea is in search of a full-time registrar/preparator. This position combines art handling with inventory management.

A description of our ideal candidate:
-A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working at an art gallery or museum
-A positive, upbeat, attitude and a CALM, pleasant, professional demeanor
-Expert use of computers; high proficiency in Artbase, all MS Office programs, and Photoshop
-Ability to communicate information and cooperate with other staff members
-Takes initiative, follows through on projects, manages time and tasks well and stays cool under extreme pressure
-Detail oriented, very organized
-Have existing relationships to vendors such as framers, shippers, photographers, restorers, etc.
-Familiarity with artist materials and use of power tools
-Ability to lift heavy objects
-Impeccable packing skills
-A curatorial eye for hangings and installations
-Ability to lift 75 lbs.

Duties include:

Registrar:
-Enter all artwork information into Artbase
-Consignments
-Loans to galleries and museums
-Incoming and outgoing shipment receipts and releases
-Responsible for photography of each artwork

Photography:
-Digital documentation of every artwork in the gallery
-Coordination of professional photography
-Marked work as photographed in Artbase
-Record photography costs

Packing and shipping:
-Coordinate crating, domestic and international shipping
-Pack artworks for local deliveries and Fed Ex

Insurance:
-Respond to requests for insurance certificates

Off site storage:
-Maintain inventory of all works in off site storage

INSTALLATION and PREPARATION
-Gallery exhibitions
-Art Fairs
-Clients (as needed)
-Coordinating freelance assistance
-Coordinating extra construction or equipment

Framing:
-Coordinate framing and keep inventory of empty frames for future use
-Framing, matting and hinging of works
-Record costs of framing

Restoration:
-Familiarity with artist materials for use in simple restoration jobs

Artwork presentation:
-Installation and assistance with presentations of works to clients


GALLERY MAINTENANCE
-Lighting, cleaning, trash disposal and general maintenance of the gallery space and offices
