Carnegie Museum of Art seeks an art handler to work on an occasional, as-needed basis, assisting with a variety of tasks and responsibilities related to exhibit installation and deinstallation. Assists Chief Preparator and Associate Preparator in handling permanent collection and loaned works of art. In addition to installation and object handling, this position is responsible for the design and fabrication of mounting systems for works to be displayed in the museum which may require special attention because of inherent instability or specific installation requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School graduate or equivalent necessary; Bachelor’s degree in studio art or architecture preferred. One or more years' experience in exhibit installation and preparation is required. A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license is also required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Must be familiar with museum standards for conservation, preservation, and object handling. Knowledge of art handling techniques and safety procedures and the ability to tend to progressive responsibilities working with and handling high-value museum objects in a variety of media is required. Basic metalworking skills are essential. These include soldering, welding, braising, basic metal forming, tap and die, and cold connecting. Must be comfortable working in all metals. Must work closely and collaboratively with conservation, A.P.I., and design staffs in addressing the safety and security of works displayed while also considering the aesthetic goals of a particular installation. Some evenings and weekend hours may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have good dexterity, hand eye coordination, and the ability to climb and to work on ladders for extended periods of time; to reach work with hands above shoulder level; to lift heavy objects (50 lbs); and to stand or walk for an eight hour day.
