Conservation Technician (Regular Full-Time)

Reporting to the Director, Conservation Center, the Conservation Technician will assist conservators and scientists with a wide range of exhibition, preventive conservation, and preservation activities for the permanent collection and artworks on loan to the museum.
Some duties include: framing and frame repair, carpentry, carving, casting of decorative elements, gilding, metal and wood refinishing; designs and fabricates custom textile mounts for exhibitions, packing and transport; assists objects conservators with minor treatment and the preparation and stabilization of artworks requested for exhibition and loan; monitors and maintains exhibition gallery spaces including microclimates, dusting and/or cleaning of framed artworks, objects, and plinths; assists the Chemical Hygiene Officer with the monitoring of light, temperature and RH to ensure compliance with loan contracts and with the evaluation of commercially available display, storage, and construction materials for compatibility with artwork; participates in all aspects of lab maintenance including housekeeping, annual inventories, and ordering supplies; provides oversight for contract janitorial staff engaged in gallery maintenance; as a member of the Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC), learns the appropriate response to stabilize and protect cultural property; performs anoxia and freezing of artworks as part of an integrated pest management strategy; acts as a courier for art, domestically and internationally, overseeing the handling in transport and installation.
The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in art history or a related field from an accredited fine art institution with at least two years of experience in a fine art museum or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Basic computer skills and ability to work with collection management software (e.g. TMS) is required. Experience handling fine art and knowledge of current conservation and preservation standards, practices and ethics is preferred. Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs. and stand for long periods when working.
