The John Michael Kohler Arts Center is currently building a register of available preparators for upcoming projects. Please submit your résumé to be included on a list of preparators who are interested in being contacted on a project-by-project basis. The exhibitions team will aim to provide a minimum of two weeks notice of all projects. In your résumé, please include your desired workload by selecting from the list below:

  • 1–5 consecutive days
  • 5–10 consecutive days
  • 1–2 months
  • Flexible

The temporary preparator is available for the installation of exhibitions; for the packing and crating related to exhibitions and collections. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Preparing galleries prior to exhibition installations, including but not limited to wall construction, wall painting and repairing, and pedestal construction and mount-making.
  • Transporting works of art, related materials, and equipment for exhibitions and collections, internally and externally.
  • Packing, crating, and shipping of all works of art and related materials loaned to or owned by the Arts Center.
  • Assisting in the care and organization of collection storage areas.
  • Assisting with the monitoring of environmental conditions in gallery spaces.
  • Assisting with building projects, and site-specific installations.
  • Ability to work directly with artists to install their works of art.
  • General duties related to the workshop or prep room.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Qualified candidates must have a BA or BFA, and a minimum of three years of experience handling and installing works of art. Experience in a museum preferred.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software including spreadsheet and word processing software. Knowledge of design software is a plus.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and experience in carpentry, welding, construction, painting, matting and framing art, mount-making, rigging, mounting signs, and graphics.
  • Operational knowledge and experience using a forklift, and general knowledge of how to use it to lift heavy and sometimes awkward loads. Experience driving a 25 ft. truck.
  • Ability to think on the fly and solve installation and handling problems on a timely basis.
  • Heavy lifting, climbing, and strenuous physical activities are essential functions of the position.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
A valid WI driver’s license is required of employees who drive Arts Center vehicles.
