The Collections Manager takes overall responsibility for the physical care of collections and spaces used for collection storage, preparation and exhibition. This is a critical position at the Newark Museum, encompassing some 130,000 works of art in its care on a campus of seven buildings. The Collections Manager works closely with the Registrars, the Curators, and the Exhibition Department, as well as with other staff, to ensure the ongoing preservation and safety of the collections, both while in storage and on display.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the Preparator, the Collections Care Technician and other collection related personnel as needed
  • Supervises assignments for collections care staff and provides assistance to Registrars and Curators
  • Prioritizes work requests and collections projects from Registrars and Curators
  • Responsible for preparation of objects for storage, exhibition and loan (moving, packing/unpacking, numbering, light cleaning, mounting, matting, framing, and storing; including developing storage solutions)
  • Responsible for the cleanliness and ongoing organization of collections storage, conservation lab, and preparation and repair room, including procurement of object maintenance and storage supplies
  • Oversees storage renovations, repairs, and upgrades and art moving projects
  • Takes the lead in ongoing collection inventory
  • Responsible for oversight of pest control, backup environmental monitoring in collections areas and general care of objects on exhibition, including the Ballantine House and outdoor spaces
  • Oversees fine art shipping with museum vehicle
  • Works with Registrar, Curators and Development staff on potential grants related to collections care
  • Provides monthly and annual reports to the Registrar, the Chief Curator and Director



RequirementsQualifications:
B.A. or B.S. in field related to Museum mission with at least five years’ experience as a preparator, collections manager, or equivalent training. Masters in Museum Studies a plus. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to solve complex logistical problems. Requires excellent art handling skills and the ability to manage people. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
