The role of the part-time Exhibitions Preparator is to help coordinate and supervise installations and de-installations on CCA’s Oakland campus, to assist with gallery maintenance and general operations, and to occasionally assist with administrative tasks related to the CCA Exhibitions program. This position reports to the Director of Exhibitions and Public Programming and is supervised by the Exhibitions Manager. The position is based in Oakland at the Oliver Art Center, but may occasionally support installations/de-installations in San Francisco.





Responsibilities

  • Supervising the installation and de-installation of gallery exhibitions, specifically leading Sunday and Monday installations on CCA’s Oakland campus at the Oliver Art Center and Isabelle Percy West Gallery.
  • Spackling, painting, preparing walls and galleries to be exhibition-ready and performing tasks involved in displaying, storing, cleaning, cataloging, securing, and installing art exhibitions.
  • Assisting students, faculty, and visiting artists with the hanging, installation, and de-installation of exhibitions.
  • Setting lights for exhibitions.
  • Helping train and manage student Work Study preparators.
  • Communicating with the Exhibitions Staff via phone, Email, and in-person meetings on a consistent basis during assigned shifts.

SCHEDULE NOTE:
This position requires availability for regular Sunday shifts. Weekly shifts are Sundays and Mondays 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. with a mandatory unpaid 30-minute lunch break and paid 15-minute break.
Physical & Dexterity Requirements: A combination of active work, which may involve event preparations and set up, and sedentary desk work. Frequently may require lifting 30+ pounds, opening boxes or packages, standing for prolonged periods of time, and setting up tables, displays, and event equipment.







Requirements

  • Previous experience in art handling and/or preparator work.
  • Experience lighting artwork in a gallery setting.
  • Knowledge of current art installation best practices and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to perform strenuous physical activities including occasional fabrication and heavy lifting (30 lbs. minimum) and work from tall ladders in order to work on lighting or the installation of art.
  • Eagerness to pitch-in as needed.
  • A willingness to train others and be trainable.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience with video and media equipment desired.
