This position is located in Collections and Exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), Smithsonian Institution. The employee leads the management of its collections and recommends policies, priorities, goals and objectives to maintain and enhance the preservation, security, and access to collection objects.
The incumbent serves as Chief Registrar of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) and is responsible for the management of the NPG’s 22,000+ collection items. As a key member of the NPG’s senior staff, with primary responsibility for planning, directing, and coordinating all aspects of NPG registration functions concerned with collections management, acquisitions, loans, and other collections-related activities in support of NPG operations. The Chief Registrar serves as principal advisor to the Associate Director for Collections and Exhibitions , Director, and NPG’s staff on matters relating to NPG registration activities. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring physical control of the collections, and for ensuring compliance with and adherence to the NPG’s collections management policy, all relevant Smithsonian, Federal, and international rules and regulations, and best practices for collections management as identified by the American Association of Museums and other museum professional organizations.
The incumbent reports to the Associate Director for Collections and Exhibitions, and supervises the staff of the Office of the Registrar. S/he may also monitor the performance of contractors providing services to the Office of the Registrar, and supervise interns.

RequirementsImplements the NPG’s Collections Management Policy, continuously monitoring the policy for suitability to both Gallery’s and the Institution’s needs and conformance with applicable current laws and statutory regulations and updating and revising as appropriate.
Oversees the movement and security of artworks, ensuring that all objects belonging to the NPG or in its custody are secured, shipped, crated, and handled with appropriate measures.
Plans and implements programs of the Registrar’s Office.
