    Preparation and Security Assistant - Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, MO

    The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, seeks a dynamic, self-motivated individual to join the Museum’s art preparation and security departments. Founded in 1881, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is a nationally accredited university art museum with an exceptional collection of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century American and European art and a stimulating assortment of intellectually rigorous special exhibitions, publications, and education programs.

    Primary Responsibilities
    The Preparation and Security Assistant provides essential support to the preparation and security departments of the Museum. Under the supervision of the Lead Preparator, the Preparation and Security Assistant works with contractors and preparation and registration staff in all aspects of art handling, packing, storage, and other art preparation duties. This position assists with exhibition design and installation in collaboration with preparation, registration, and curatorial staff. Under the supervision of the Security Supervisor, the Preparation and Security Assistant also aids with monitoring and maintaining the Museum's facilities and provides the critical oversight necessary to ensure the Museum, its assets, and its patrons are protected. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position that reports to the Lead Preparator and Security Supervisor.

    Requirements

    • BA degree or equivalent
    • Three years’ experience in art handling, exhibition installation or set design, fabrication, and lighting; fine art museum experience and experience matting and mounting two-dimensional objects preferred
    • Knowledge of professional standards for art handling and museum practices related to the physical care of art collections
    • Carpentry experience
    • Interpretation and preparation of technical drawings and instructions
    • Installation and troubleshooting of audiovisual equipment
    • Knowledge of professional standards related to the safety and security of museums and their contents as well as electronic security systems preferred
    • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skill set
    • Excellent time management, analytical, and organizational skills
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions under pressure
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with computer design software preferred
    • Available to work outside of normal business hours and alternating weekends
    • Ability to undertake national and international courier-related travel as necessary
