    Head of Art Preparation, Buffalo NY

    The Head of Art Preparation oversees and monitors all aspects regarding the handling and movement of any artwork on as well as off-site; collaborates with curators, registrars, and buildings and grounds staff to ensure the timely installation of special and collection-based exhibitions; and assists Albright-Knox staff and outside researchers requiring access to works in the Collection.
    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Ensure the safe installation of art.
    • Create, update, communicate and implement processes and procedures with Art Preparation team for the safe and efficiently organized storage of all art objects on and off site.
    • Manage the moving, packing and unpacking, receiving and releasing Albright-Knox artworks for in-house use and for loan to other institutions.
    • Maintain accurate storage inventory with the Registrars.
    • Accompany and install Albright-Knox artworks at other museums when necessary.
    • Oversee the receipt and installation of special exhibitions, including projects organized in-house, as well as those contracted from other institutions.
    • Assist with handling and installation of artwork including report preparation and documentation of installation process to ensure safety of visitors, staff and the art.
    • Partner with Buildings and Grounds to update and maintain a shared published Master Building Schedule
    • Partner with Buildings and Grounds to create and maintain documentation of responsibilities for movement and installation of artwork and exhibitions.


    • Estimate budgetary and personnel needs and implement cost-control measures such as energy conservation, evaluation of project work bids, etc.
    • Create narrative update for Quarterly Director’s report


    Job Requirements

    COMPENTENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Arts degree required; Masters of Fine Arts preferred
    • Five (5+) years experience as an art preparator in a museum setting
    • Demonstrated skills in managerial responsibilities
    • Impeccable art installation and art handling skills.
    • Applicable experience in the preparation of art objects for exhibition and loan.
    • Ability to use various hand tools including, if possible, fork and scissor lifts.
    • Expertise in art processes and materials.
    • Ability to supervise and mentor own staff and to assist outside contractors, visiting artists, curators, and conservators.
    • Key Competencies: Excellent communication skills. Must be results-driven, energetic, diplomatic, highly organized, detail oriented, and collaborative.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software requested.
