About San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Founded in 1935, SFMOMA was the first museum on the West Coast devoted to modern and contemporary art. From the outset, the museum has championed the most innovative and challenging art of its time, and we continue to exhibit and collect work by both modern masters and younger, less-established artists. By embracing the challenge of the new and unexpected, we hope to encourage fresh ways of seeing, thinking, and engaging with the world.

We strive continuously to expand the range of cultural experiences we offer, and to provide as many ways as possible to make the art meaningful and accessible for our community. To that end, we are enhancing the museum's role as a place for learning and inspiration through Where Art Can Take You: The Campaign to Transform SFMOMA. The campaign's centerpiece is an expanded building, scheduled to open in early 2016, that will showcase an expanded collection and dramatically increase our capacity to serve visitors of all ages.

While our building is closed for construction, SFMOMA is on the go, presenting an array of new art experiences around the Bay Area and beyond. At the same time, our online offerings, including multimedia, social media, and our blog, create ways to explore modern art and connect with the SFMOMA community no matter where you are.

We invite you to take a closer look and discover all that SFMOMA has to offer.
