The Exhibition Manager serves as a critical member of the collections, exhibitions, education and programs division and works closely with curator, collections manager, and education and programs manager. The Exhibition Manager reports to the Head of Collections and Exhibitions and is responsible for 11,000 square feet of permanent exhibition space divided into 10 galleries and 8,000 square feet of temporary exhibition space, divided into two 4,000 square-foot galleries. This position is responsible for planning and producing in collaboration with curator, education and programs manager, and collections manager a program of permanent, temporary and traveling exhibitions that meets the museum’s exhibition objectives.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developing and managing the museum’s exhibition projects, using a five-year calendar to chart and track permanent, temporary and traveling exhibitions, including annually in March, the Night of Artists Exhibition and Sale; a popular summer exhibition designed as a visitor attraction; and a scholarly fall exhibition serving the educational objectives of school groups and the inquisitiveness of youth and families;
  • Plans, policies, and procedures affecting exhibitions;
  • Convening and chairing the museum’s exhibitions and programs committee;
  • Convening and supporting the board of directors, collections and exhibitions committee;
  • Organizing and managing museum personnel into exhibition project teams and other project teams;
  • Setting design and communications standards;
  • Planning and implementing the audiovisual and interactive components in exhibitions and public programs;
  • Producing and budgeting exhibitions, including proposals, design costing, construction, and overall scheduling, maintenance and repairs;
  • Staying educated and informed on new trends and best practices in exhibition design and development;
  • Researching, soliciting and/or organizing temporary and traveling exhibitions;
  • Circulating traveling exhibitions and achieving revenue targets associated with these exhibitions;
  • Evaluating exhibitions in collaboration with the education and programs manager and the head of communications;
  • Writing RFPs and contracting with technical suppliers and creative producers and managing the work of outside vendors on exhibition projects;
  • Evaluating all system, product, and service proposals for exhibitions;
  • Supervise exhibition staff and;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



RequirementsQUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree or certificate in graphic design, industrial design, commercial art, architecture, interior design, theater design, or studio arts with course work in typography and media use.
  • Degree in discipline related to museum studies, art, art history, or the Western genre.
  • Experience and proven ability in exhibition design, exhibition preparation, graphic design, and audiovisual media, preferably in a museum or cultural attraction.
  • Experience in project management, exhibition fabrication, related construction work.
  • Demonstrated ability in the use of audiovisual and interactive techniques.
  • Knowledge of collections management and standard conservation practices.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to work well with others under difficult situations.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with software related to exhibition planning, design, production, and management.
  • Administrative ability and experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Position requires periods of physical activity, including lifting crates and other objects not to exceed 25 pounds, pushing carts and other wheeled vehicles containing crates, works of art and related objects, not to exceed 50 pounds. Evening, weekend and holiday work may be required, but will be arranged in advance.
