Chief Preparator Full-Time position
Reports to the Curator of Photographs
Supervises junior preparators, interns, volunteers, and students
Required Skills:
• Exceptional art handling skills
• Strong management skills and ability to prioritize tasks
• Establish and maintain a high level of craftsmanship
• Creativity and skill in preparing mounts and housings
• Ability to manage a team under pressure and deadlines
• Strong problem solving skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Strong Math skills
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
• Knowledge of the history of photography
Duties Include:
• Coordination and installation of exhibitions: Including oversight of preparators, technicians, and designers
Preparation of mats, frames etc, signage
Installation of collections material, lighting, signage, labels etc
Preparation and oversight of exhibition production schedules
Records and reports exhibition related expenditures
• Coordination, preparation, packing, and unpacking of traveling exhibitions
• Preparation and packing of outgoing loans; unpacking of returned loans
• Coordination and oversight of condition reporting
• Maintain inventory of framing and installation supplies, identification, location and purchase of special installation supplies as needed
• Regular inspection and maintenance of galleries, departmental facilities and equipment
• Maintain inventory of exhibition furniture and equipment
• Maintain temporary storage of collection material
• Maintain clean, organized and secure work areas.
• Supervision, training and evaluation of interns, volunteers, students and preparators in all aspects of their jobs in the Creative Services department
• Participation in loan committee meetings, department meetings and all-staff meetings
• Other duties as assigned
