POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Full-Time Preparator
DEPARTMENT: Curatorial
SUPERVISOR: Manager of Exhibition Design
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
The Crocker Art Museum is dedicated to promoting an awareness of and enthusiasm for human experience through art. We measure our success by our ability to enrich the intellectual and cultural life of the communities we serve. This position helps fulfill this by engaging audiences by creating dynamic and educational exhibition installations. Working as part of a team of art preparators/installers, this position is primarily responsible for facilitating the installation of exhibitions in the Museum per the Museum exhibition program.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Frame paintings and works on paper.
Cut and assemble matting for prints, drawings, and photographs.
Collaborate in a team environment to produce superior quality exhibitions.
Installing and deinstalling exhibitions and installations according to the plans of the Exhibition Designer, Registrar, or designated Curatorial staff.
Preparing and packing/unpacking objects for travel and assisting with incoming and outgoing shipments.
Ability to safely use hand and power tools and other necessary equipment.
Paint galleries and exhibition furniture.
Prepare signs and labels.
Build furniture, platforms, and mounts.
Fabricate hanging and mounting systems for works of art.
Ability to perform physical work associated with preparation of exhibits.
Perform maintenance duties to keep exhibits and displays clean and clearly labeled.
Prepare artwork and historical artifacts for shipping; receive and unpack shipments of art objects and other exhibition related materials.
Transport art in 26’ moving trucks; knowledge of proper strapping techniques .required.
Ability to multi-task and assume a variety of projects simultaneously.
Perform related duties as required.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· Design and build object mounts, frames, and exhibit furniture
· Successful completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university in art, commercial art, museum studies, art museum education, or a closely related field.
Ability to solve problems and find attractive and safe solutions to hanging and/or showcasing unusual works of art.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff members, volunteers, and subcontractors.
Ability to work under pressure and adhere to aggressive changeover schedule.
Valid California driver’s license.
Preferred Skills and Knowledge
• Matting and framing skills.
• Rigging techniques for large and small objects.
• Three years of professional art installation experience working in an art museum, gallery, related institution, or art studio.
• Familiarity with lighting art.
• Complicated fabrication of wood, metal, or plastic.
• Familiarity with welding techniques; MIG, Oxy, and brazing.
• An understanding of the goals and strategies of art museum education.
• Knowledge of art history.
• Strong design skills and knowledge of a range of aesthetic styles to assure historical. appropriateness and compatibility between the exhibition design and the art presented.
