SUMMARY:


The Assistant Registrar for Exhibitions is responsible for assembly, installation, and dispersal of assigned exhibitions, both on-site and touring. The position requires knowledge of current professional museum registration standards and best practices.
The Assistant Registrar for Exhibitions reports to the Senior Registrar who has overall responsibility for the Museum's registration policies, standards, and procedures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Manages detailed arrangements for packing, crating, shipping, insurance, and couriers for incoming loans and traveling exhibitions
Schedules and supervises exhibition installations and de-installations at the Museum and at other locations, as necessary
Hires and supervises art handlers
Arranges framing, mount making, and conservation as needed for exhibitions
Works with Curators, Designers, Exhibition Manager, and Director of Operations & Exhibitions Services throughout exhibition planning process
Participates in exhibition budgeting process by preparing crating, shipping, courier, insurance, and storage estimates
Tracks and monitors exhibition expenses throughout the fiscal year, providing periodic budget updates
Processes exhibition-related invoices
Prepares condition reports
Assists with fine arts insurance arrangements for loans, including application of the Museum’s fine arts policy, government indemnities, and lender insurance
Creates and manages computerized and paper records, including loan files, receipts, certificates of insurance, lender correspondence, and loan agreements
Acts as courier for the Museum in the United States and abroad, overseeing transport, packing, unpacking, installation and handling of objects
Archives exhibition files according to departmental procedure

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Assists the Senior Registrar with departmental projects, including updating facilities reports, disaster plans, etc.
Assists the Senior Registrar in evaluation of policies and procedures, including applications of new technologies for the department
Other various administrative and registration-related duties and responsibilities, as assigned by Senior Registrar

Job Requirements
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:


B.A. in Art History, Museum Studies, or similar (M.A. preferred)
3+ years of experience in exhibitions registration, preferably at an art museum
Knowledge of museum standards for conservation, preservation, and object handling
Thorough knowledge of fine arts packing, domestic and international shipping, customs brokers/freight forwarding, and fine arts insurance
Excellent organizational capabilities, attention to detail, and strong oral/written communication skills
Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
A systematic approach to work and the ability to produce clear and effective schedules for exhibitions
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
Familiarity with collections management databases, preferably TMS (including exhibitions module)
Knowledge of foreign languages helpful
