The Exhibit Designer participates actively in a team environment, planning and implementing the aquarium's interpretive program through the medium of aquarium exhibits. The Exhibit Designer participates in the development of permanent and temporary interpretive exhibits; generates exhibit concepts, proposals and elements; leads the selection of media and means of presentation that best express the interpretive framework and storyline. Designs exhibit areas, components, interactives, audio and video, systems, traffic flow, ergonomics and integrates life support, tank design, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire safety. The Designer produces complete fabrication documentation for complex exhibit projects; participates in cost estimating and value engineering. You will coordinate production and repair of exhibit elements with the Production Manager. This position requires advanced knowledge and skills in exhibit design, graphic design, components, interactives, fabrication, construction and integration of life support, tank design, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire safety. A proven ability to conceptualize and develop exhibit areas, components and systems is required. This position requires a keen ability to organize work and meet project deadlines in the concept, development, design and documentation phases of the project
Essential Function


Create unique, rich exhibit designs that forward the exhibition's main message and goals
Serve as a central player on design/development teams
Create exhibit design sketches, renderings and scale models
Produce contract documents for design, fabrication and installation of diverse exhibit elements.
Research and specify materials; coordinate and incorporate engineering, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, fire safety, ADA, and code requirement in construction packages
Organize work and meet strict project deadlines
Communicate and cooperate with other team members to further the design/development and production processes
Present designs and make formal progress reports to the Programs Steering Committee and other groups as needed
Work with outside consultants and vendors as needed
Work with Exhibit graphic designer to create effective exhibit signage
Work with Exhibits CAD drafter to create complete exhibit documentation packages

Required Knowledge/Experience:


Bachelor's degree in Art, Architecture, Industrial Design, Museum Studies or a related field, or equivalent experience
A minimum of 4 years' experience and demonstrated skills in designing methods and details of fabrication for a diverse array of exhibit components and systems including cabinetry, mechanical interactives, multimedia platforms and sea water exhibits
Hands-on knowledge of a broad range of fabrication methods used in the production of exhibit components.
Ability to construct exhibit component design models
Literacy in computer graphics software, preferably Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
Literacy in Auto Cad software to produce exhibit fabrication and installation drawings efficiently.
Literacy in graphic design, word processing, database and spreadsheet programs
Experience in creating exhibit and environmental graphics and knowledge of exhibit graphics production technologies
Must have experience in monitoring the process of exhibit components from fabrication to installation to ensure that they follow design criteria and meet the quality standard of the contract documents
Strong communication skills and ability to perform job tasks and responsibilities in a team environment
Must be able to work with tight deadlines
