EXHIBITION DESIGNER

Reports to: Director of Exhibition Design

SCOPE OF POSITION:
The scope of this entry-level design position is to design and manage production of exhibitions and permanent collection installations for the museum under the supervision of the Director of Exhibition Design and in collaboration with the Exhibition Design team, Carpentry Staff, Collections Department, Department of Education, Curators, Conservators, the Information Services Department, and Visitor Services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Design and/or collaborate with Exhibition Design team including graphics and media, as well as outside exhibition design contractors, on presentations of exhibitions and permanent collections installations.
Work closely with Registrars, Preparators, Curators, Carpentry staff, Graphics staff, and Educators to manage and track all aspects of design and implementation of exhibition and permanent collection installations.
Provide oversight for the quality of exhibition and permanent collection construction.
Schedule on time delivery of exhibition and installation design projects, within budget.
Estimate, order materials, and negotiate costs with vendors.
Consult and coordinate with staff on exhibition logistics and production timetables.
Work closely with Education and Curatorial staff on didactics for exhibitions and permanent collection installations.
Oversee installation of the Education exhibition space in collaboration with all departments.
Serve as liaison with outside institutions regarding installation information necessary for projects organized by other institutions.
Distribute floor plans and other design materials related to the permanent collection galleries and other Museum spaces to Curatorial, Collections, Exhibitions, and other staff members, as necessary.
Maintain inventory of exhibition furniture and monitor its condition.
Produce design materials such as sketches, renderings, models and maquettes.
Consult with other DMA staff on other aspects of interior design as necessary, to ensure a consistent visual image for the Museum.
Attend departmental and other museum planning meetings as required or requested.
Schedule meetings as necessary when related to exhibition design elements.
Other duties, as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



B.A. degree required; M.A. degree preferred.
Two years plus of architectural, environmental graphic, or exhibition design experience encompassing initial concept stage to completion including 2-D graphic design, interactive media design, or wayfinding design experience is a plus.
Proficiency with computer-aided design such as Vectorworks and Adobe Creative Suite such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign .
Experience with CAD, Sketch-up, or other 3D design tools is a plus.
Knowledge of 3-dimensional design, construction, and layout ability.



Ability to understand color as applied to environmental spaces.
Basic knowledge of lighting design in terms of understanding materials and fabrication techniques with sensitivity to conservation concerns.
Excellent computer skills with competence in Word, Excel, and Outlook necessary.
Ability to manage complex projects and guard confidential information.
Ability to plan and work within budgets and deadlines.
Superior organizational skills.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Ability to work with the public and co-workers professionally and tactfully.
Ability to work effectively with outside vendors and contract designers.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with flexibility.
Ability to solve problems and prioritize needs in a variety of situations where immediate decisions may be necessary.
Ability to meet short and long term deadlines and maintain fiscal oversight.
Working knowledge of TMS database desirable.
