Temporary Preparator

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks qualified candidates for a temporary preparator position. Reporting to the Head of Exhibition Design and Production, the temporary preparator performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the preparation, installation, de-installation, and care of objects and works of art at the museum level.

Responsibilities:

· Complete and report on assigned tasks and milestone accomplishments; work to achieve smooth workflow and stated goals.
· Prepare and fabricate temporary exhibition components; install, maintain, and de-install art, objects, and related materials using appropriate and sound techniques and materials; create displays, props, mounts, and backgrounds from various media and material; set up and focus exhibit lights; install graphics, signage, and labels.
· Adjust and repair exhibition components within pre-approved guidelines.
· Use methods of handling, packing, moving, and installing artwork and objects that meet museum guidelines and standards.
· Assist in building walls, pedestals, and display cases and in making mattes, frames, and armatures as needed.
· Receive and uncrate shipments of art and related materials; may build crates as needed.
· Maintain production areas, wood and machine shop, tools and equipment, and storage areas; work in ways consistent with established safety standards and ensure all temporary staff follow those standards.

Qualifications:
To perform effectively in this position, the incumbent must have:

· Working knowledge and skills in the preparation, installation, and care/handling of valuable objects in a museum or gallery.
· Knowledge of exhibit fabrication and production techniques; experience creating mounts for two- and three-dimensional objects; experience working with wood and machine shop tools.
· Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
· Very effective oral and listening communications skills and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures, ages, and economic backgrounds; ability to work well in a team environment and independently.
· Organizational skills to multitask; ability to plan and organize projects.

Typically, these skills and experience result from completion of related college-level studies in art, fine arts, museum studies, design, or related fields and/or equivalent work experience, preferably in a similar type of organization.
