POSITION SUMMARY

The Center for Sacramento History (CSH) is a historical research and collection center for the Sacramento region which maintains artifact, archival, photographic, and audiovisual collections, making them available for study and exhibition to the public. It is the official repository for City and County archival records. The artifact collection contains over 30,000 items preserving the cultural, social, political, and economic history of the Sacramento region. The Center has one of California's most complete collections of public documents dating from 1849. Additionally, it holds over six million photographic images, as well as a large collection of moving images in film, video and digital formats. The collections are housed at two storage facilities and exhibited at the Sacramento History Museum and other public buildings.



After sixty years of collecting, the Center for Sacramento History (CSH) is embarking on its first comprehensive collections inventory at the Center's three facilities to improve access and preservation and align itself and its sister institution (The Sacramento History Museum) with national standards in collections care and organization. The goals of this project are to reconcile and organize the institution's accession and loan records; update collections management procedures and processes; and complete a comprehensive inventory of the archival and artifact collections to meet national standards necessary for A.A.M. accreditation. CSH seeks an experienced Museum Registrar to act as the Project Manager for this three year process with possible extension for completion of project.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

Under the supervision of the Curator of History, the Project Manager will organize and manage the inventory project. They will perform the following tasks:

* Review and analyze current records and systems for inventory management and recommend the best path for future organization;

* Prepare and establish procedures for evaluating and resolving existing data inconsistencies;

* Reconcile inconsistencies in recordkeeping and documentation;

* Develop an inventory plan and procedures including re-housing and re-shelving as needed;

* Train and oversee the work of interns, volunteers, and other staff members performing cataloging, inventory and collections management duties for this project;

* Create and update registration and collections management procedures and manuals based on professionally accepted museum and archival standards;

* Recommend changes and updates to forms;

* Become certified to operate an electronic forklift;

* Other duties as assigned.


EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

* Minimum five years experience in collections management and/or registration, with supervisory experience and proven ability to train others in key areas such as collections care and handling.
* Proven experience organizing, performing and supervising a complete inventory according to AAM accreditation standards.

* Experience managing diverse collections types and materials; demonstrable experience working and handling archival and three-dimensional collections.

* In-depth knowledge of artifact collections management, documentation, and preservation standards, policies, and procedures, and an understanding of archival procedures.

* Must have extensive experience with Past Perfect 5 (or other museum related database) and MS Office (required).

* Ability to solve problems independently and creatively.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills.

* Solid work ethic, enthusiasm, and sense of humor.

* Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, climb ladders and move large boxes and objects.

* Possession of a current driver's license and electric forklift certification or the ability to acquire both.
EDUCATION
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in museum studies, history, or a closely related postgraduate program and five years of verifiable museum registration experience.

TERM AND SALARY RANGE
Full-time, three year position with the possibility of extension. Annual salary of $46,000 plus benefits.
