Job description:
Position: Museum Technician II (full-time permanent)
Reports to: Fabrication Coordinator
Salary: Pay Grade 19 ($20.90 $24.60 per hour plus an extensive benefit package)
Closing Date: October 31, 2014
MOV is seeking a Museum Technician II to support the delivery of our strategic objectives relating to our core business (programming and exhibition schedule). Working under the direction of the Fabrication Coordinator, the Museum Technician II assists with the construction, installation and maintenance of variety of exhibition displays including those involving multi-media applications. The ability to provide technical support for complex special events is also required. The Museum Technician will also be responsible for helping to maintain inventory of supplies and keeping track of purchases and supply orders, the moving and storage of artefacts, and the supervision of auxiliary workers.

Qualifications:
Education
A minimum 2 year, post secondary diploma in technical production for theatre, live events, displays, museums or theme parks.
Experience
At least 2 years of professional experience, ideally in a variety of mediums, with significant experience working in a scene shop or display fabrication facility. Experience working with wood, Plexiglas and aluminum is essential. Experience as a painter, lighting technician, audio, and A/V technician is also required. Experience with prop making, electronics or special effects is desirable.
Required job skills
Proficiency in use of all power tools used in a cabinet making shop
Ability to read, understand and build from construction plans and drawings
Familiarity with regulations ensuring public safety in museum/gallery environments
Some drafting ability. Familiarity with Vectorworks would be an asset
Some experience handling artefacts and preparing mounts
Familiarity with the most common suppliers in the industry would be an asset
Ability to work at heights
Ability to lift and move heavy objects
Proficiency with computers, graphics production, digital media hardware, audio, video and lighting
Other qualifications:
Ability to deal courteously and effectively with people
Proven ability to work in groups as a team player
Excellent oral communication skills
Ability to accurately interpret and summarize information in a clear and concise manner
Good written communications skills
Excellent organizational skills including the ability to work independently, set priorities and meet deadlines
Knowledge of safe work practice in a shop environment
Valid BC drivers licence and ability to drive cargo vans
Hours: 35 hours per week. The Museum works a flexible work week schedule and evening and weekend work may be required.
