The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is seeking a highly qualified, well-rounded Registrar with strong leadership skills and an interest in participating in the full life of an academic museum. The Registrar will play a central role in implementing the orderly transfer and correction of collections data from Argus to Museum Plus. The Registrar reports to the Deputy Director/Chief Curator as part of our curatorial team and works closely with the staff in other departments including Archives and Education. Salary range is $40-45K depending upon experience.
Specific responsibilities include overseeing the accession/deaccession, cataloging, and collections management processes for the museum's collections; maintaining and overseeing the Museum's collections database and collection records; coordinating collections management activities and the museum's storage facilities; coordinating loans and transfers in support of exhibits, research, and student/faculty access; assisting with risk management, conservation, and pest management strategies. Independent research, publication, and exhibition assistance are encouraged.

Founded in the early 1900s, it holds more than one million ethnographic objects, archaeological specimens, and images from all parts of the world, with particular strengths in the Americas, Africa, and Southeast Asia. The Museum seeks to inspire creative and critical thinking about culture by fostering interdisciplinary research and education to increase our understanding of the material world. It provides opportunities for faculty and students to work with collections and the public, teaching through objects and programs in classrooms, in the gallery in Manning Hall on campus, and at our Collections Research Center in Bristol, RI.
Job RequirementsThe successful candidate should have a degree in Anthropology, Anthropological Archaeology, or Museum Studies (with additional proven background in Anthropology or Archaeology) and 2-4 years relevant experience in museum collections management (both digital and object based). He or she should also have familiarity with international and national museums; contacts with curatorial departments and other museum colleagues. Essential skills: demonstrated knowledge of museum database management systems (knowledge of Argus and/or Museum Plus preferred).
