The Portland Art Museum is recruiting for a Conservator. Reporting to the Director of Collection and Exhibitions the Conservator oversees the preservation and restoration across the Museum. An expert at understanding why and how artifacts deteriorate, as well as knowing how to give them a new lease of life, this role is responsible for the examination, technical analysis, conservation research, documentation, and treatment of works of art in the permanent collection and on loan to the Museum.

Founded in 1892, the Portland Art Museum is comprised of both the Museum and the Northwest Film Center, founded in 1971. The Museum’s encyclopedic collection of works are displayed in 112,000 square feet of galleries and the Film Center’s exhibition, education and artist service programs engage diverse audiences region-wide. The preeminent visual and media arts organization in Oregon, the Portland Art Museum presents an ambitious pubic program, presenting 18-20 exhibitions annually.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
With a general knowledge, and conversant in paper, sculpture, paintings and other materials and mediums; examine, analyze, research, document and treat works of art in the permanent collection and on loan to the Museum
Oversee partnerships and collaborations with conservators in private practice and regional laboratories
Collaborate with Collections, Curatorial, and Facilities departments in continually updating and implementing best practices for care and preservation of art collections
Oversee the development and growth of the conservation department at the Museum.
Collaborate with the advancement department on grant writing and fund-raising.
Oversee the management of an internship program.
Participate in public engagement and educational programing, ranging from responding to audience inquiries to public speaking
Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the conservation studio and records
Participate in condition reporting of traveling exhibitions and courier outgoing loans
Advise Registrars and Preparators on techniques for handling, installing and packing
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate degree from a recognized art conservation training program or equivalent combination of education and training
3 years’ experience in a conservation laboratory or studio
Broad general knowledge of conservation techniques with experience in Works on Paper preferred
Exposure to all aspects of conservation lab management, grant proposal preparation and income management
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Ability to deal with public, volunteers, and other staff tactfully
Ability to document treatments in written and photographic form, and skill in writing clear, succinct and accurate condition and treatment reports and proposals
Experience with word processing, spreadsheets and database software
Ability to work independently and in concert with co-workers and outside contractors
