The National Lighthouse Museum (NLM), a private, not-for-profit museum located on Staten Island, NY seeks to hire a full-time Curator to take a lead role in the development of the National Lighthouse Museum that is slated to open in August 2015. The Curator will be responsible for overseeing work related to the Museum’s collections, education, and volunteers.

The NLM will interpret and chronicle the history of U.S. lighthouses that formally began in 1789 within the auspices of the United States Lighthouse Establishment which was an operating component of the United States Department of the Treasury.

Collections Responsibilities:
• Cultivate donors for artifacts and archival material.
• Manage and develop a small but growing collection of artifacts, archives, and library materials.
• Maintain proper museum collections documentation and legal paperwork.
• Establish professional museum standards, policies, and procedures related to curatorial work.
• Research, develop, and install exhibits.
• Collaborate closely with and serve on Museum’s collections committee.

Education Responsibilities:
• Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate all in-house and outreach programs.
• Provide guidance in the development and design of education activities to ensure effectiveness for students and teachers.
• Create and develop interpretive plans for exhibits.
• Work to ensure the best visitor experience, producing diverse strategies to meet the diversity of needs.
• Analyze the impact and success of interpretive strategies and apply learning to new and existing strategies.

Volunteer Management Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement a recruitment plan that will advance the current volunteer program through expanding opportunities and engaging both adult and youth volunteers.
• Oversee and coordinate daily volunteer assignments.
• Define meaningful volunteer opportunities and training needs and to create volunteer job assignments and schedules that correspond to the needs of the Museum.
• Insure Museum volunteers maintain a high awareness of the Museum’s responsibility to understand and respond to the needs, desires and interests of its audience.

Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Museum Studies, history or related field preferred.
• 3-5 years prior experience as museum curator, collections manager, exhibit developer, educator, or volunteer manager.
• Museum management experience desirable.
• Knowledge of and experience with industry standards and best practices.
• Excellent research, writing and organizational skills.
• Familiarity and experience with museum databases (PastPerfect a plus), computers, and Microsoft Office suite.
