The Columbus Museum seeks an Exhibition Coordinator/Designer to prepare and supervise the Museum’s exhibition programming, including the creation of budgets, schedules, design, layout, and graphics for temporary, permanent, and hands-on exhibitions. The Columbus Museum has both a collection of American art and a historical collection that focuses on the Chattahoochee Valley. The Museum’s grounds include the Bradley-Olmsted Garden, designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm in the 1920s for homeowner and noted industrialist W. C. Bradley.
The Exhibition Coordinator/Designer oversees the art and artifact handler and the exhibit preparator and reports to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions. The Exhibition Coordinator/Designer plans and implements the installation and design of exhibitions, hands-on galleries, and other public areas in close consultation with museum curators, educators, the graphic designer, and public relations staff in developing project concepts. The position requires an organized, multi-task oriented, creative problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced work environment overseeing a complex schedule of installations and other design/construction projects. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential. S/he must have be able to communicate visual ideas to appropriate colleagues, both verbally and in the form of drawings and/or computerized images.
Education, experience, and skills
Master’s degree in exhibition design, interior design, graphic design, fine arts, or closely related field is preferred.
Skilled use of design software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other applicable CAD software such as Sketch Up and Vector Works).
Strong portfolio in exhibition design or related field such as interior design.
Ability to create original artwork by means of traditional illustrative media and computer imaging, to develop two- and three-dimensional exhibits, and to produce conceptual drawings, floor plans, elevations, shop drawings, and models
Experience developing cost estimates and bid specifications
Ability to relate works of art and historical artifacts to appropriate design schemes, whether traditional, modern, or contemporary
Ability to lift and carry equipment, handle fragile artifacts without damage and to assist physically with the installation of exhibits.
Knowledge of construction techniques to coordinate gallery renovation and of construction materials (lighting, fabrics, video, audio, computers and other exhibition-related equipment) to consult outside sources and order necessary items and services.
