Position Summary
SENIOR LIGHTING TECHNICIAN
Description:
Expert lighting design and application are critical to an enjoyable art museum experience. The Princeton University Art Museum seeks a qualified exhibitions lighting technician to initiate, implement, and maintain the lighting schemes for 29,000 square feet of programmed museum galleries. The Senior Lighting Technician will provide effective, imaginative, and resourceful lighting schemes for the museum's comprehensive collections galleries and world-class exhibitions programming. The successful candidate is expected to keep pace with today's lighting industry developments and to provide recommendations to the museum's senior management, as necessary. The Senior Lighting Technician reports directly to the Manager of Exhibition Services (MES).
Responsibilities:


Advance the museum's exhibition design strategies in consultation with key museum personnel, including designers, curators, and the museum director
Coordinate with managers and department heads to plan and develop reasonable scope and schedules, to define production milestones, and to anticipate and adapt to changing priorities within the gallery setting
Closely work with the MES to produce results on time and within budget
Recognize and anticipate the preservation risks associated with light levels across all fine art media
Coordinate closely with Facilities and University personnel on such architectural features such as built-in fixtures, track lighting, and lighting controls
Establish efficient and safe worksite practices that are consistent with University standards and protocol
Procurement of all lamps, fixtures, supplies, and hardware associated with gallery lighting, and continually monitor costs and negotiate with providers, as needed; maintain inventories
Daily lighting upkeep of the museum galleries

Additional responsibilities:

As needed, will fulfill art handling assignments directed by the MES
Assist in the preparation and upkeep of 29,000 square feet of programmed museum galleries. This includes painting and repairing walls, preparing cases, pedestals, and mounts for display, and housecleaning
Occasional warehouse assistance, including trucking and hauling, of exhibition furniture, crates, props, and materials

Essential Qualifications
Requirements:
The Senior Lighting Technician is expected to move confidently within confined spaces and among the museum's valuable objects on display. Every workday, an essential requirement of the job is to properly analyze the physical environment and to assess the inherent risk associated with working above the gallery floor. The successful candidate will be able to communicate clearly, anticipate the next move, handle stress, and stay focused.Additional requirements:


Minimum of four years of production experience in a museum or repertory theater
Tested proficiency in the principles and techniques of theater and/or museum production
Possess a solid working knowledge of electrical and safety codes
Understand the physical nature of production work and its non-traditional work schedule
Minimum of two years of experience in a museum or gallery setting as an art handler
Working knowledge of audio-visual formats and time-based media installations
A general knowledge of art history and an appetite for fine art
Excellent communication and problem solving skills
An ability to work collaboratively and follow instructions
Detail oriented, self motivated, and a keen sense of mission
Knowledge of exhibition conservation guidelines
Proficiency in primary carpentry skills
Comfortable climbing ladders and scaffolding and operating aerial lifts
Good physical health with the ability to move swiftly in and out of trucks, as well as lift, push, pull, and support heavy objects, crates, and sundry items
The ability to dead lift 75 pounds is required and the successful applicant must pass a rigorous pre-employment physical
Valid driver's license
Bachelor's degree is required, MA or MFA preferred

The final candidate will be required to complete a post-offer, pre-employment physical screening successfully.Preferred Qualifications
