Duties & Responsibilities:


Assists Assistant Director/Registrar and Curator with the care of collections exhibited on campus and placed in storage, including sculpture, textiles, paintings, works on paper and photographs. Assists with physical inventory.
Collaborates with visiting artists/curators and works in concert with other museum staff to (1) evaluate exhibit plans for feasibility including technical, material and personnel requirements, (2) develop necessary work plans to support aesthetic presentations by deadline (3) provide exhibition layout in advance of installations addressing aesthetic and physical aspects of exhibits.
Establishes and develops procedures for packing and unpacking museum objects; oversees the design of special crates, modules, brackets and mounts to meet insurance/installation requirements and shipping specifications; oversees packing and unpacking museum objects to ensure safety of objects and conformance to established procedures; assists in the loading and unloading of trucks with art deliveries.
Maintains inventory of equipment and materials necessary to repair museum objects and artwork, and build exhibits; keeps abreast of new materials and procedures for all aspects of art handling from conservation, preservation and preparation/art handling sites; determines equipment and materials to order; receives equipment and materials from vendors and checks shipment to ensure order accuracy.
Organizes and maintains non-collections storage areas in the museum, including storage areas for tools, supplies, pedestals, vitrines and crates.
Prepares detailed drawings of proposed exhibits; designs exhibit cases, panels, and other units to meet environmental needs of museum exhibit objects; provides technical, aesthetic and logistical support for exhibition preparation including layout,lighting and fabrication of museum exhibits.
Researches, solicits and negotiates with vendors to provide contracted services for exhibit design, set up, and installation of special projects and events; submits information to museum administration for review; consults with museum administration on vendor selection.
Supervises and trains all new graduate assistants in proper exhibit design, fabrication and installation; trains graduate assistants in appropriate methods of transporting and handling museum art and objects to ensure safety; identifies training needs based on work evaluation, academic interests, new regulations or policies; creates training manuals to aid in graduate assistant training. Similar responsibilities for “laboratory” education of students (Museum Studies Certificate Program, Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees) when working on museum exhibit.
Supervises the maintenance of exhibits including cleaning and repairing exhibits, repairing walls and light fixtures, replacing glass, wood, and acrylic case covers, and painting walls and exhibit cases.
Supervises the preparation of artwork and construction/installation of exhibit components to ensure intended presentation/interpretation of museum exhibit concepts; works in concert with other museum personnel to arrange for objects and graphics for exhibits; supervises repair of objects and use of tools.
Transports various museum objects and artwork to and from other sites such as other government offices, other museums, private lenders and artists; supervises installation of exhibits at other sites to ensure safety of artwork.
Works in concert with other museum staff in monitoring museum visitors and planning/executing special events; maintaining appearance of galleries and lobby; monitoring temperature, humidity and light levels throughout collection storage and exhibition areas; and monitoring collection storage spaces.
Other duties as assigned.

Hiring Range: $25,000 to $28,000
