Preparator Position Description
Department: Art Department

Reports to what position: Designer and Manager of Exhibitions

Job summary/position overview: Under the direction of the Designer and Manager of Exhibitions, assists Lead Preparator with all aspects of installation, preparation and de-installation, including preparing objects for exhibition; disassembling and removing objects for exhibition; maintaining exhibitions while they are on display; maintaining electronic media devices used in the galleries; maintaining storage areas; and working with collections. Practice the methods defined in the Museum's Art Handling Policy.

Essential functions/specific responsibilities:


Participate in the installation, crating/uncrating, packing/unpacking, handling and movement of all permanent collection, loaned and temporary exhibition objects.

Assist in the preparation of objects for exhibition, including mounting, matting, and framing .

Participate in the safe transport of art objects including driving; and loading, unloading, and securing art.

Assist in the preparation of galleries and installation of pedestals, Plexiglas tops, platforms, walls, and the installation of graphics, title walls, and exhibition labels.

Inspect art exhibition areas to determine safety of objects; perform necessary upkeep to insure continued enjoyment of galleries, i.e. replace lamps; dust; clean Plexiglas; and replace labels. Responsible for maintaining the operation of audio/visual, electronic and digital equipment including, but not limited to, electronic media devices, DVD players, projectors, computers, media players and their components used in temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection. Responsible for establishing and maintaining an inventory of electronic devices and for training other staff members in their function and control.

Shares in the responsiblity of maintaining safe, clean and well-organized art vaults, receiving room, frame room, and prep area. Informs Registrar or Lead Preparator of low supply levels for packing, storing and exhibition supplies.

Assist Registrars with locating and returning objects to storage; conducting collection inventories; notifying Registrars of changes or damage to exhibition objects; and aiding with storage projects at all three museum sites and offsite storage facilities.

Additional duties, as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


BA degree in art, design or related field; or equivalent experience in installation and fabrication of museum exhibits.

Requires a good working knowledge of art handling and installation methods, matting, and framing.

Must be able to lift 80 pounds.

Knowledge of audio/visual and digital technology a plus.

Experience driving a truck a plus.
