Job Summary: The Exhibition Designer collborates in exhibition development with many other members of the Design, Exhibitions, and Education Departments. Responsibilities include: translating concepts into detailed layout and installation plan drawings; designs for auxiliary graphic materials; bidding, contracting and overseeing the fabrication of exhibition components; personally executing certain exhibit materials; supervising all phases of exhibition installation in collaboration with the Registrars and Curators; and implementing improvements to the aesthetic environment of the Frist Center as necessary.

The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Essential Job Functions: The ideal candidate:


Participates in crafting the vision of an exhibition and collaborates with the team on aligning the interpretation with the institutional mission
Designs layouts, showcase exhibitry, and preliminary lighting plans of exhibitions
Understands ADA compliance, methods of maintaining the security of the objects, maintaining exhibition flow, and the materials necessary to meet the conservation requirements of the objects
Prepares detailed working drawings and instructions for the production of exhibition design elements
Contracts with fabricators, vendors, and others involved in exhibition production and supervises the execution of contracted services
Collaborates on exhibition graphics with the Graphic Designer
Supervises exhibitry construction and other pre-installation site activities
Together with the Registrar(s) and Curator(s), supervises the exhibition artwork installation
Oversees the final lighting of the exhibition
As required, advises on other design questions pertaining to the Frist Center’s activities
Participates in departmental budgeting
Tracks project expenses compared to budget
Works effectively with volunteers and interns
Coordinates projects with outside contract designers when necessary
Other responsibilities as required



RequirementsEducation and Work Experience: Preferred B.A, B.F.A., or B.S. in a field related to the museum profession, such as Fine Arts, Art History, Design, Architecture or Media and Performing Arts. Must have a minimum of three years of experience in museum exhibition design and production. An interest in working with new media and technology, with strong organizational skills.
