SUMMARY OF POSITION The Exhibit and Facility Technician, under the direction of the Exhibits/Collections Manager, is responsible for the construction and maintenance of exhibit cases, design elements, and exhibit furniture as needed. The Technician also facilitates the set-ups of special events and regularly scheduled meetings in the Rick Allen Room. Additional responsibilities include the management of the small reptile collection used in educational programming, plus general in-house maintenance and repair of the Herrett facility and exhibits not routinely covered by the CSI Building and Grounds Department. This position requires a varying work schedule including evenings and weekends.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Exhibits:
- Under the direction of the exhibits/collections manager, construct exhibit cases, design elements, and exhibit furniture as needed
- Support exhibit maintenance and repair. Inspect exhibits on a regular basis and make repairs in a timely manner
- Assist with design and planning of exhibitions as needed
- Assist with installation of art exhibitions as needed
- Mount signs and graphics as needed
- Maintain an informal inventory of building materials, lightbulbs, and exhibit supplies, and order supplies as needed
- Event Set-ups:
- Facilitate set-ups of special events and regularly scheduled meetings in the Rick Allen Room
- Communicate with diverse staff members to facilitate effective set-ups for each type of event
3. Reptiles:
- Manage small reptile collection for use in educational programming
- Maintain healthy, safe enclosures for the animals, with regular scheduled cleaning and upkeep
- Responsible for purchasing, preparing, and storing foods for each type of animal in the collection
- Must be able to handle reptiles and other animals in a manner safe for the animals, visitors, and staff members.
- Must maintain sanitary and uncluttered spaces for storage, feeding, and display of animals
- Recognize illness or physical injury in reptile and other animals
- Present educational programs using live animals from the museum collections
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Practical experience in rough and finish carpentry
- Knowledge of construction materials for exhibit building including traditional and high-tech materials
- Working knowledge of low-voltage electrical circuitry
- Familiarity with the Uniform Building Code and safety issues related to public facilitie
- Well-organized
- Able to work cooperatively with a diverse staff
- Able to maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop
- Finish carpentry experience is recommended.
- Experience with power tools to include large and small power tools
- Experience with a wide-variety of hand tools
- Demonstrate knowledge and implementation of standard construction techniques
- Familiarity with and ability to use standard shop power tools, including table saw, router, circular saws, pneumatic tools, etc.
- Ability to weld small parts
- Ability to stay on schedule, while managing multiple demands
- Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment
- Ability to read plans and diagrams
- Experience handling and caring for reptiles
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Physical Requirement: Lifting/Carrying Up to 80 pounds: May be required to handle full sheets of plywood and drywall, long sections of dimensional lumber, large sections of prefab displays, folding tables, stacks of portable chairs, sections of pre-fabricated staging, and ladders to 16 feet in length.
