The Clay Studio is a non-profit educational arts organization dedicated to the promotion and development of the ceramic arts. Known as one of the best centers for the support of artists and the creation of their work in the country, The Clay Studio supports the ceramic arts through its artists residencies, gallery, studio space, school, educational & outreach programs.

The Clay Studio seeks a Collection Assistant to complete The Clay Studio Collection Catalogue Project. The Collection consists of approximately 1200 objects of ceramic art. Most of the works were made at The Clay Studio between the late 1970’s and the present. Approximately half of the Collection remains to be catalogued and entered into a database. The Collection Assistant’s workflow will involve technical as well as research components. S/he will complete standard collection management procedures to fully catalogue the art work. S/he will also contribute to research on each piece, including information on the artist, provenance and significance of each object. The Collection Assistant will assist with the development of our Collection Policy together with the Curator, Collection Committee and Board.

The Collection Assistant will be tasked with understanding the wider scope of the Collection as well as the details of each object. S/he will be responsible for making sure each object has a complete catalogue entry, record photograph, and appropriate storage location. The CA will have weekly check ins with the Curator and periodic reports to the Collection Committee.

This is a grant funded 12 month position, with 22 hours per week. Specific work days could be flexible. The employee will be reviewed at 30 & 90 days.

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:

Undergraduate degree required (Graduate degree preferred) in Art History, Ceramics, or Arts Administration, with knowledge of the ceramic process, materials & artists.
Experience with handling and cataloguing collections
Experience with database management
Strong written and verbal skills
The ability to lift heavy objects, handle stairs and a dusty environment
Strong organizational skills, the ability to manage a multi-faceted project
The ability to work well with a team
Strong administrative skills and attention to detail
Computer literacy (Mac) with experience in:
Microsoft Word & Excel, Photoshop, Collection management software
Aptitude for researching object provenance through primary and secondary sources.
This position works independently and cooperatively with TCS Curator and Gallery Staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Familiarize yourself with the project’s progress to date
Complete catalogue entry for each object, including physical description, materials, date of creations, artist information, and specific information about the piece (about half of the total 1,200 object collection is catalogued)
Set up new Collection Database Software
Enter data gathered in collection management database
Photograph works in the collection
Contacting artist when necessary to gather information
Tag and number each piece
Recording and managing object locations, etc.
Research objects by unidentified artists
Produce reports periodically and at the end of the project to help assess the collection
This position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a project to catalogue and present to the public a collection of ceramic art that has been growing at The Clay Studio for the last 40 years.

This Collection Assistant position is appropriate for someone who is truly passionate about ceramic art, collections management and/or art history. While all the preferred skills are necessary, the ability to manage a multi-faceted project and work well with others is highly valued. This position is funded by a grant from the Henry R. Luce Foundation. Hourly wage commensurate with experience, benefits are not included.
