Job Description: Currently located on Colgate University's beautiful campus in Hamilton, New York, the collection of the Picker Art Gallery features approximately 11,000 objects from antiquity to the present, including approximately 8,000 works on paper, 1,400 photographs, 900 paintings, and 300 sculptures. Colgate University is one of the country's leading liberal arts colleges, with a student population of about 2,900 and 300 faculty. This is an exciting time in Colgate's history, as the newly conceived Center for Art and Culture will become home to two university museums: the Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology. These distinguished university museums play a significant role in Colgate's teaching mission and reputation, a relationship that will be deepened with the development of a new Museum Studies track in the Department of Art and Art History. Reporting to the Director of University Museums, the preparator of the Picker Art Gallery is responsible for, but not limited to, the installation/deinstallation of all exhibitions, for all design (exhibition, programming, website, advertisement), for the maintenance and storage of technical equipment (video projectors), for keeping gallery spaces and non-art spaces clean, and for handling and properly displaying objects of the Picker Art Gallery/Longyear Museum of Anthropology collections in accordance with approved policies and in alignment with museum best practices.

The preparator is highly skilled and responsible for all aspects of museum exhibitions and for the safe handling of works in the collections. The successful candidate enjoys designing, planning and producing high quality installations (temporary, collections, and/or education-based exhibitions) both in our current facilities and in the envisioned Center for Art and Culture.

- Coordinate the safe art/object handling of the collections and loans including building mounts and crates, matting, framing, hanging, packing, moving, shipping, receiving, and transporting objects and assisting with photography.

- Properly maintain spaces (exhibition, museums, art storage and preparator spaces) and responsible for properly painting the galleries.

Essential Functions: This position will have the following accountabilities and responsibilities:

In collaboration with staff, oversee all aspects of exhibition design and implementation including moving works of art in and out of storage and exhibition areas, installing and deinstalling objects properly and assisting with condition reports.

Direct and provide training for on-call preparators and interns; oversee outside contractors.

Follows museum standards of conservation, security, environmental controls and safety.

Assists in the day-to-day cleaning and maintenance of objects.

Maintains contact with museum professionals, and professional networks.

Responsible for proper building crates, packing and shipping of art/objects.

Represents the museum at professional organizations. Assists and works with the museum staff, Colgate students, faculty, and Hamilton constituencies.

Ensures proper communication and collaboration with various stakeholders (e.g. registrar, curators, vendors, outside conservators and other stakeholders).

Responsible for the preventative maintenance of equipment such as mechanical lifts, gallery lighting, carpentry shop/tools, materials and supplies.

Responsible for keeping proper supply on-site, and for effective collaboration with curators, registrar, facility and security manager, and security staff.

Responsible for effective participation in emergency planning, response and mitigation as well as researching needs for CAC. Accountable for responsibly developing and managing departmental budget.

Must be capable of lifting 50lbs and be comfortable working at heights of 50ft.

Responsible for following the established Code of Ethics for Museums.
Academic-Art, Art History, Anthropology: Demonstrated ability to create installations. Demonstrated ability to assess the display needs of objects while also considering their safety. Demonstrated understanding of museum exhibition guidelines and standards. Demonstrated skill in painting gallery spaces, matting, framing, mount making, and designing.
Administrative-Museum Management:Demonstrated understanding of principles and practices of collection management to include proper handling, installing, packing, shipping and receiving objects. Demonstrated ability to design exhibitions and material related to programming. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff and manage projects in keeping with deadlines. Demonstrated ability in framing, carpentry work, and safely using a variety of shop tools. Ability to meet the physical requirement of the position: climb ladders, lift and move objects up to 50 Ibs, and operate power tools.
Technology: Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Google-Drive, design related programs (e.g. In-Design), TMS, and FileMakerPro.
Instruction/Education: Demonstrated ability to train students, and work with potential donors and all constituencies.
Museum Security: Demonstrated understanding of museum security requirements and ability to follow safety procedures and security protocols.

Qualifications
(Education and Experience):
- 3 to 5 years of museum or gallery experience and a Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of experience or training required.
- Must possess a current and valid driver's license.
- Must be able to plan, prioritize, schedule, implement and oversee simultaneous projects assuring timely completion.
- Ability to research and prepare cost estimates, develop and successfully manage budgets.
- Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, conservators, museum professionals, scholars, collectors, lenders and the general public on a daily basis.
- Broad knowledge of technical equipment and variable media in terms of exhibition presentation, exhibition layout configuration and archival preservation required.
- Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of PC and MAC design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Google-Drive, design related programs (CAD-Design, InDesign), and familiarity with collection management software (TMS, FileMakerPro) required.
- Knowledge of design and art handling procedures for art of all media, safety regulations and ADA requirements.
- Carpentry skills required.
- Must be capable of lifting 50lbs and be comfortable working at heights of 50ft., climb ladders and use scissor lifts.
- Must possess a high level of accuracy and attention to detail as well as the ability to identify and solve problems as needed.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must be able to work extended hours during installations/de-installations as needed.

Additional Preferred Qualifications: - Experience with permanent collections and exhibition installation strongly preferred.
