The Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, is hiring a Curatorial Assistant to assist with care and documentation of the collections.

Curatorial Assistant (Full-time). [Position #707] The Curatorial Department seeks a Curatorial Assistant to prepare and monitor collections for exhibit, storage or study, and to maintain historic interiors, galleries, and collections storage spaces using preventative conservation techniques, including daily cleaning, integrated pest management, temperature and humidity monitoring, and light-level monitoring. The Curatorial Assistant will help with installation and transportation of collections, as well as inventory, registration, photography of the collection and supervision of special events. The position is Sun- Thurs 7am – 3:30pm and reports to the Collections & Exhibitions Manager. Requirements include experience working with museum collections, excellent computing skills, the ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and early morning hours, follow written and oral instructions, work effectively with little supervision, the ability to climb ladders and scaffolds and lift up to 50 lbs. Complete Job Description:

Objective:Employs preventative conservation techniques to preserve Monticello’s collections on exhibit and in storage, maintain historic interiors and collections spaces. Assist with registration and record data about the collections. Supports the efficient and professional execution of the functions of the Curatorial Department.

Level of Responsibility:-Reports to: Collections & Exhibitions Manager
-Supervisory duties: None

Job Duties:· Daily cleaning and maintenance of collections and collections spaces including vacuuming, dust removal, cleaning modern upholsteries, and floor coverings.
· Takes lead role in monitoring collections environment including integrated pest management, temperature and humidity monitoring, light level monitoring.
· Prepares objects for exhibit, storage, transport, study, or photography.
· Assists with movement and installation of collections.
· Supervises special events and media access to collections and historic interiors.
· Assists the Curatorial Department through systematic inventory of collections objects.
· Assists with registration of the collection including cataloging and condition reporting
· Performs research in accession files.
· Carries out related data entry in Proficio, the collections database.
· Performs additional duties as assigned.
· Attends Foundation meetings as required.

Standards of Performance:
Successfully carries out the functions outlined above in an efficient and timely fashion.

Qualifications:· Demonstrated object handling skills and understanding of condition concerns for a variety of media and materials.
· Demonstrated knowledge of preventative conservation techniques.
· Hands-on collections experience in a museum setting is preferred.
· 4 year college degree in Art, Art History, Museum Studies or related field.
· Strong software skills in Microsoft Office Suite.
· Knowledge of Proficio or other collections management system is preferred.
· Excellent written and verbal communication.
· Able to work early mornings, and weekends.
· Able to lift 50 pounds, climb ladders and scaffolding.

Classification:The position of Curatorial Assistant is a non-exempt hourly classification and is eligible for overtime. On occasion this position may require working evenings and traveling.
