Museum Preparator III, Matter/Framer - 73042


2 year fixed term



JOBPURPOSE:

This is a senior, expert-level position, working underminimal direction of the Exhibitions Registrar/Head of Preparation who makesthe general work assignments. Employees in this classification perform a largervariety of duties than those expected of the Preparator II level. The Matter& Framer at the Cantor Arts Center mats and frames works of art for thepermanent collection and for exhibitions. The Matter & Framer is expectedto produce work of the highest possible museum standard and on time to meetcritical installation schedules. Assignments are performed independently but in collaboration with a teamof Curators and Conservators.

Specific roles and responsibilities may include thefollowing: Prepare estimates for preliminary exhibition cost, size, design, cut4 ply and 8 ply window mats or float mounts, hinge or mount artwork in avariety of mediums, fit artwork into frames for exhibition or storage, packworks on paper for safe shipment via art carrier, unframe selected artworkafter return from exhibition and coordinate return to art storage, build oracquire new frames as necessary, maintain a clean, well-organized shop that maybe shared with other staff members, maintain inventory of standard frames;order and stock matting and framing materials and supplies, may work ingalleries as part of the installation team for exhibitions and rotations andinstall two dimensional works, may serve as a Lead Preparator on assignedexhibitions including active participation in the design, coordination, andimplementation of exhibitions using a high level of organization, communicationand time management skills, assist in production of exhibition labels, usingvac-dry mount press, solicits quotes, review estimates and selects vendors.



This position is covered by a collective bargainingunit.

COREDUTIES:

The Preparator III responsibilities include, but arenot limited to, the following:


Serves as Lead Preparator on assignedexhibitions including active participation in the design, coordination, andimplementation of exhibitions using a high level of organization, communicationand time management skills.
Designs and fabricates custom mounts andexhibition furniture
Works in galleries as part of theinstallation team for exhibitions and rotations including installation ofdigital media and multimedia and electronics (film, computer, audiovideo).
Performs gallery lighting design, withknowledge of LED lighting, re-lamping and exposure settings specific to objectrequirements.
Designs and fabricates custom storagehousing for long-term storage at CAC.
Packs and transports art objects to andfrom lenders and donors.
Assists with receiving exhibitionshipments and with the unpacking and repacking.
Helps maintain tools, equipment, shopspaces and art storage
May assist with framing and unframingworks of art
Transmits instructions and specificationsreceived from supervisor to workers; advise supervisor of work progress.
Explains tasks to workers; Inspects workfor conformance with specifications. Guide and assist other Preparators asneeded.
May solicit quotes, review estimates andselect vendors.
Ensure that safety rules are followed.



Qualifications


MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS

Educationand Experience:

B.A. degree preferred with a minimum of seven years ofprogressively responsible experience in a museum setting with a permanentcollection.


Knowledge,Skills and Abilities:



Demonstrated proficiency of handlingvaluable works of art in a wide variety of media including but not limited topaintings, bronze, ceramic, glass, metals, mixed media, textiles, works onpaper, contemporary art and new media.
Demonstrated proficiency in installationof exhibitions and layout and lighting design. Ability to move or assist in moving heavy objects and ability to operategenie lifts, forklifts, pallet jacks, etc.
Demonstrated experience with installationcoordination of large, complex exhibitions and gallery reinstallations.
Demonstrated proficiency of practices andmethods in mountmaking including earthquake mitigation and demonstrated abilityto apply this knowledge with initiative and judgment, concern for detail,accuracy, and neat execution of work.
Demonstrated skills and knowledge of shopequipment and ability to effectively perform various skilled and semi-skilledtasks, including woodworking, brazing, use of adhesives and fasteners,construction methods, and use of stationary and portable power tools. Experience framing, sheetrocking, taping andpainting walls.
Demonstrated knowledge of safe andarchival storage materials and techniques for loaned and museum collectionobjects.
Demonstrated ability to install andtroubleshoot a variety of digital media equipment (film, computer, audio,video).
Demonstrated experience with gallerylighting, lighting design and ability to determine light exposure settings specificto the needs of an exhibition or to a given object.
Ability to work cooperatively withsupervisor, designer, museum staff, students, volunteers

MinimumQualifications:


Effective oral and written communication
Ability to accurately perform measurementsand hang art to specifications.
Demonstrated ability in the design andfabrication of custom storage housing and knowledge of archival-qualitymaterials.
Demonstrated knowledge of safe and properhandling methods.
Demonstrated experience with shop equipmentand ability to perform various skilled tasks including wood, metal and plasticworking, brazing, use of adhesives and fasteners, construction methods, and useof stationary and portable power tools.
Demonstrated high level of design andimplementation of a variety of mount and display solutions. Knowledge of practices and methods in mountmaking including earthquake mitigation and various materials safe for use withart objects such as wood, paper, fabrics, plastics, metals, mechanical, paintsand adhesives.
Ability to work cooperatively withsupervisor, designer, faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and general public.
Demonstrated problem solving ability.
Demonstrated ability to effectively workindependently.
High level of organization, communicationand time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to effectivelycoordinate large and complex installations, solving the most difficultchallenges.
Demonstrated proficiency with design anddatabase programs
