The Lead Art Preparator oversees all aspects regarding the handling and movement of any artwork on as well as off-site; requires close collaboration with curators, registrars, buildings and grounds staff, and Security personnel to ensure the timely installation of special and collection-based exhibitions; and assists Albright-Knox staff and outside researchers requiring access to works in the Collection. This position necessitates a creative problem-solver suited to the art museum setting, with significant project management experience in a fast-paced work environment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage the day-today activities of the Art Preparation Department, including hiring, training, scheduling, and directing department team members, as well as freelance staff.
Ensure the safe installation, de-installation, storage, packing and unpacking, and receipt/release of all works of art in the collection and works on loan to the Museum.
Aid the Registrar’s Department in maintaining an accurate storage inventory of the collection.
Oversee the maintenance and stocking of the Museum’s art storage areas
Oversee the delivery and pick up artwork from: offsite storage locations, framers, conservators, private collectors and artist studios.
Assist Registrar’s Department with documentation of installation/de-installation procedures for works of art.
Partner with the Registrar’s Department to maintain protocol for responsibilities associated with the movement and installation of works of art.
Accompany, or arrange for the appropriate team member, to oversee installation or de-installation of works of art at other venues, when necessary.
Estimate departmental budgetary and personnel needs; as well as implementing cost-control measures such as energy conservation, evaluation of project work bids, etc.
Create and submit update for Quarterly Director’s report to the Director’s Office.
Attend bi-weekly Department Head and Curatorial Meetings.



RequirementsCOMPENTENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS


Bachelor of Arts degree required; Masters of Fine Arts preferred
Five plus (5+) years practice as an art preparator in a museum setting, with demonstrated project management and managerial experience
Ability to efficiently delegate, supervise and mentor staff
Ability to manage multiple projects within an ever-changing environment
Impeccable art installation and art handling skills, with expertise in art processes and materials
Applicable experience in the preparation of art objects for exhibition and loan
Ability to use various hand tools including, if possible, fork and scissor lifts
Excellent communication skills—written, verbal and interpersonal—with immediate team and members of the staff, external contractors, and other museum professionals.
Must be results-driven, energetic, diplomatic, highly organized, detail oriented, and collaborative.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software requested.
Must be available to occasionally work evenings and weekends
