DescriptionThe position plays a key role in the physical preparation of the Museum's exhibitions and other activities. The position also participates in maintaining the Museum's art collections, and it exists to fill the physical needs of the Museum's exhibition, collections, and event programs. The most important service of the candidate is to meet the deadlines of the projects in a timely and competent manner adhering to professional standards.
-The Preparator arranges and coordinates installation and de-installation of exhibitions and preparation and exhibition of permanent collection material, establishing timeline and event activities with supervisor and other appropriate museum staff. The Preparator helps determine the actions, personnel, and assets needed along a given timeline by the supervisor and takes part in overseeing the completion.
-The Preparator is advised of budget limitations and procedures by their supervisor and participates in determining the budget for supplies and services needed in their area with final approval form their supervisor. The Preparator makes purchases for components of museum exhibitions with oversight of these purchases by their supervisor.
-Candidate must have a working knowledge of all aspects of exhibition preparation, installation, and de-installation (carpentry, matting, framing, general art handling, painting, etc.)
This position is restricted and has an anticipated end date of 03/01/2019. Though the position does have the possibility of being extended, continuation past that date is dependent on factors including but not limited to leadership discretion, the need for services, the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

RequirementsRequired knowledge, skills, and abilities:
-Art display and storage methods, techniques, and procedures
-The operation of woodworking and painting equipment
-Principles and practices of museum exhibit and display design, construction and finishing, carpentry work, alterations and repairs
-Lighting techniques in gallery settings
-Display construction in a museum/gallery setting
-Mount making and preservation techniques
-Project management principles, practices, techniques and tools
-The Preparator should have strong organization, communication and carpentry skills.
-The Preparator must have advanced knowledge of professional art handling best practices
-Direct knowledge of lighting and best practices for exhibition lighting per any external or internal agreements
-Handle and prepare collection or loaned items for exhibition including matting, framing, removal from storage, and transporting to display site
-Effectively communicate with others in producing desired exhibitions
-Operate a scissor lift, woodworking, lighting and painting equipment safely
-Handle art and crating, carpentry and fabrication, and/or exhibit preparation
-Handle and install works of art in all media
-Maintain flexibility with changing schedules and designs
-Maintain accurate and thorough records
-Manage and maintain a clean and well organized work area
-Must have a valid driver's license and pass certification to drive University van
