The Senior Collections Manager is responsible for leading a team in the management of the Museum’s object and art collections, and in the support of inter-departmental coordination related to collections. This position leads and manages day-to-day operations of the department and communications, contributes to goal setting for the department, and sets standards for accessioning objects into the permanent collection, as well as manages the collections database.
The Senior Collections Manager assists the department head as an advocate for the Museum’s collections, representing the Museum to the interested public, researchers and artists. The position will also support project teams and coordination related to collections throughout the museum in the development of exhibitions and programs, working closely with Curatorial, Exhibitions, Education and Programs/Outreach staff. The Senior Collections Manager will supervise the Collections Manager and Registrar, and will have budget responsibility for registration and collections management projects.
Essential Functions:


Supervise and lead a team in the coordination, support and management of collections policies and practices for the Museum
Serve on cross-departmental project teams in the development of exhibitions and programs as they relate to collections
Support Museum’s development of innovative programming and outreach as it relates to collections and access
Develop, implement, and maintain museum policies and procedures related to collections management and registration
Support strategic development of the collection, with recommendations on potential acquisitions and objects for de-accessioning
Develop and implement a consistent accession process for objects accepted into the museum’s permanent collection
Respond to staff and public requests for information related to collections
Provide support and lead coordination for the integration of collections policies with museum operations, security, facility and risk management and assessment
Work with Museum staff to promote the use of the collections in education, curatorial research, exhibitions and programs
Support Museum-wide planning and policy recommendations for Museum, providing expertise in collections management
Engage the general public, researchers and artists, and support professional networking within the museum profession
Assist with creating access to objects in public spaces, exhibitions, programs, and in online platforms to enhance access to collections by the general public
Maintain national registration practices; establish registration and accession procedures for the museum, including any necessary permit coordination
Supervise volunteers and interns working in collections



RequirementsKnowledge/Skills/Abilities:


Experience leading small teams, project coordination, and managing resources for diverse collaboration, use and access
Demonstrated understanding of museums and their operations, their role as a repository, and as an institution for the public
Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively manage multiple projects
Professional experience and skills to facilitate institutional collaboration and understanding of the role of collections in the overall strategic goals of the museum
Expert knowledge in supporting and advocating for the ethical use of collections and Museum resources
Experience classifying and organizing collections, archives or similar materials; database management; maintaining a consistent data lexicon
Knowledge of the history and cultural context of artifacts in collections; applicability of laws, regulations, and guidelines as they relate to the management of collections
Knowledge of research techniques and resources relevant to the collection; preservation & management of associated documentation and other media
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to assess priorities and work well under pressure; excellent time management, problem solving and analytical skills with attention to detail
Ability to work well with diverse groups of Museum stakeholders



Qualifications:

Master’s degree in art history, history, anthropology, museum studies, or related field required.
Two years’ experience in project management and coordination, specifically related to the museum field, art, anthropology, or history
One year experience supervising and leading staff
Demonstrated knowledge of project organization, database management and reports, TMS and Crystal Reports preferred
