The Inventory Technician will report to the Head Registrar, and work together with the co-Inventory Technician to complete a wall-to-wall inventory of the Museum’s permanent collection, comprised of both physical and digital materials. S/he will also work closely with the Head of Cataloging and Archives, Associate Registrar, and Conservation staff to perform his or her duties. The Inventory Technician will locate, document, and rehouse collection objects using Museum-approved methods and materials. The position is a full-time, one-year term, renewable position. Work will take place at the Museum’s off-site storage facilities in Jersey City, New Jersey, Rotterdam, New York, and at the 9/11 Memorial Museum.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Along with the co-Inventory Technician, work systematically through the Museum’s collection storage areas to inspect collection objects and document their location in the Museum’s collections management database, Collective Access, and record important object information such as dimensions and condition. Objects will be matched to records to prevent overlooking undocumented or uncatalogued objects in storage.
Along with the co-Inventory Technician, survey and document the Museum’s digital collections according to current professional standards.
Collaborate with the co-Inventory Technician and other collections staff to identify and resolve object numbering and cataloging problems using procedures established by the Head Registrar.
Physically number collection objects as needed using approved methods.
Rehouse collection objects as needed using archival materials and approved methods.
Order object rehousing supplies and maintain purchase records to keep supply costs within the allocated budget.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:


Assist with releasing and receiving object shipments and supply deliveries at the Jersey City, NJ warehouse.
As needed, pack objects for transport to the Rotterdam warehouse, including creating shipment lists for tracking objects during transit and releasing shipments from storage.
Confirm visits and accompany integrated pest management vendor at the Jersey City, NJ warehouse during monthly inspections of collections storage.
As needed, provide access to Jersey City, NJ warehouse during business hours for routine maintenance work and checks performed by building management.
Perform other collections management duties as needed, assigned by the Head Registrar.



RequirementsQUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIREMENT


Professional knowledge and experience with collections management principles and techniques, including registration documentation, accession records, object numbering and cataloging standards.
Experience working with digital collections. Knowledge of digital collections management methods and digital preservation preferred.
Professional knowledge and experience with the safe handling, movement, packing, and shipping of collections objects.
Familiarity with preventive conservation techniques and risk factors for various types of objects.
Familiarity with various types of archival materials and supply vendors.
Professional knowledge of object housing techniques and standards, with an ability to apply these techniques to various object types. Basic box building and storage mount construction skills a plus.
Proficient knowledge of collections management databases and imaging technologies relevant to archive management and object cataloguing.
3-5 years’ experience working in a museum setting in collections management and registration, preferably in the New York City metropolitan region.
Excellent attention to detail and written and oral communication skills. This position requires sensitivity to the concerns of the Museum’s multiple stakeholders, and the special trust that is represented in caretaking materials born of, and related to, the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993.
