Title: Collections Manager
Reports To: Registrar
Supervises: Preparators and Art Handlers
General Purpose:
The Collections Manager is responsible for the management, care and movement of artworks within the 21c storage facility, and for the management of the Museum installation team (Preparators and Art Handlers). The position requires a broad variety of experience, flexibility, and demonstrable leadership, management, and hands-on abilities with a range of tasks. In collaboration with the entire museum team, the Collections Manager, acts as a custodian for the collection and loaned objects. The Collections Manger will oversee the handling, packing and unpacking for travel and storage needs, assembly and disassembly of artworks in the collection. The Collections Manager will work with the Registrar to help with the preparation of artworks for exhibition, as well as incoming and outgoing loans, the processing of new acquisitions, including inventory, photography, and other collections-related projects. Position may require some travel, which could include driving heavy-duty trucks over long distances. Position requires occasional work on weekends and evenings as necessary.

Responsibilities


Lead and manage the Museum Preparators and Art Handlers.
Manage the permanent collection. Monitor movement of artworks and transportation within 21c storage.
Organize and maintain art storage.
Work with Registrar to process new acquisitions, which include, but is not limited to condition reporting, photographing, and numbering.
Work with Registrar to generate and/or update documentation associated with artwork being loaned by and to 21c.
Implement inventory project to assess condition and packing, physically number works, and update records for works already in 21c collection.
Help update and import information into collections database.
Monitor environmental conditions within storage facility.
Directs, supervises, and evaluates work performed by preparators and art handlers.
Directs, supervises and evaluates work performed by contract art handlers and interns.
Reinforces proper art handling and packing techniques for artworks of various materials, sizes and weights.
Work with Registrar to plan, prioritize, and schedule work done at 21c storage.
Works with the Director of Museum Operations to develop and administer the departmental budget, and assists in the development of exhibition and special project budgets.
Works with Chief Curator, Exhibition Designer, Director of Museum Operations and Registrar on the planning and installation of temporary and permanent art projects.



Works with the Chief Curator and Registrar to develop and manage conservation initiatives.
Assess and source project needs as required including manpower and materials.



Work with Design Preparator in maintaining the museum’s workshop and related tools, hardware, and other equipment
Work with the Registrar, Design Preparator, and Director of Operations to order supplies and manage expenses and monthly and annual budgets.



RequirementsSkills, Knowledge, and Abilities


Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Museum Studies or related field.
At least 5 years’ experience working with collections in the capacity of Collections Manager, Registrar, or Collections Specialist.
Experience using and maintaining collections management databases/software (Artsystems)
Experience managing Preparators and Art Handlers
Experience managing a departmental budget.
Experience with ordering and maintaining supplies.
Demonstration of organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to focus on tasks, and ability to communicate and lead team effectively.
Strong working knowledge/experience with creating, maintaining, and updating condition reports
Knowledge of proper packing methods, including mount making, for different mediums and materials.
Knowledge of art handling procedures for two- and three-dimensional art objects in a variety of materials, sizes, and weights
Experience installing a wide variety of artworks
Experience photographing artworks for print and digital publications
Experience conducting inventory, housing and re-housing projects
Knowledge of the principles of supervision as well as training practices and procedures.
Ability to plan, prioritize, schedule, implement, and simultaneously oversee a variety of projects
Prepare cost estimates and make sound purchasing decisions
Lift and move heavy objects as required.
Interpret working drawings.
Supervise, motivate, and evaluate preparation staff.
Participate effectively as a member of a cross-functional team.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with museum, hotel, and restaurant staff, the general public, and representatives from other museums.
Explain and carry out methods and procedures relating to the handling of irreplaceable objects of art.
Experience driving a 26’ truck and both a fork and scissor fork lift.
Experience installing and maintaining New Media works.
Must be able to pass DOT required physical examinations necessary to acquire a medical examiner’s certificate from a certified medical examiner listed on the National Registry.
Other duties as needed and required.
