JOB SUMMARY:

The Curator of Exhibitions and Collections manages the care of the Arizona
Historical Society (AHS) Central Division's collection of approximately
23,000 artifacts; ensures adherence to Collection policies and procedures;
curates exhibitions while working collaboratively with other staff on
interpretation and related programming; manages the planning process for
special exhibitions, permanent collection installations and other museum
projects that require curatorial input; writes on and lectures on
collections and exhibitions for varied audiences; supervises interns and
student workers; and positively represents the museum, its mission, and
collections to patrons and the general public.

JOB DUTIES:

- Collection Management: Oversee management of collections,
including storage, security and environmental integrity; monitor the
condition of artifacts and recommend appropriate conservation/care;
recommend objects for acquisition, deaccessioning. Conduct collections
related research and documentation. Manage collection database, ensures
compliance with AHS Collections Management Policy and Procedures; work in
collaboration with Director and Collections Committee to provide
recommendations for updates; works collaboratively with Director and
Collections Committee to develop and implement plan for completion of the
AASLH StEPs program as part of accreditation process.

- Exhibits: Work closely with Director and staff on all aspects of
exhibit development, including concept, design, plan, schedule,
installation, educational programs, publicity and fund raising; identifies
objects from within Collection or from other institutions for exhibits;
secures objects for loans; conducts research; work collaboratively with the
education curator and others in the development of narratives and story
lines; writes text panels, labels and captions; oversees the planning and
organizing of exhibition-related movement of objects. Provide historical
context and content for exhibits, programs and marketing. Assists with
grant preparation and fundraising proposals. Track and manage exhibit
budgets and schedules, exhibit related grant budgets and reporting.

- Public Access, Research & Education: Facilitate the use of
Collections for researchers, staff, scholars, students and community;
assist with publicity, marketing, websites, e-communication and related
uses; manage digital access. Work closely with Education Curator on the
development and organization of the museum's Education collections;
collaborates with Education Curator to achieve integration of collections
with education programs and activities and develop hands-on/interactive
opportunities.

- Supervision and Oversight: Train and supervise Collections
Registrar, assign work, coach and perform performance reviews. Work with
others to develop and implement internship program for collection
cataloging and specific projects. Supervise collections interns and
volunteers.

- Administrative: Develop annual Collections goals and monitor
performance against goals, complete and submit monthly Collection
Department Performance reports and statistics, track and report volunteer,
intern hours. Track exhibit related expenses.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

- Arizona History

- Demonstrated knowledge of museum and collection standards and
best practices.

Skill in:

- Proficiency with Past Perfect; Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

- Working with a team on exhibit design, development and
implementation.

- Organizational skills, follow-through and attention to detail.

- Research, writing and editing skills.

- Superior interpersonal and communication skills.

- Managing projects, including timelines and budgets.

Ability to:

- Work independently with self-direction.

- Flexible and adapt to changing priorities.

- Work in a team environment.

- Effectively supervise others.

SELECTIVE PREFERENCE(S):

- Masters’ Degree in Museum Studies, History, Public History,
Anthropology or related field required.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

- Valid Driver’s License; Posses or ability to retain a current,
valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.
Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license
record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and complete any
required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)
