The American Civil War Museum seeks an experienced registrar to oversee the documentation, condition reporting, legal rights, insurance, and loan agreements in support of the museum’s exhibits and permanent collection. With more than 15,000 objects and 40,000+ archival materials, both military and civilian, the Museum’s collection is one of the largest private collections of Civil War material culture. The Registrar reports to the Director of Collections and works closely with both curatorial and archives colleagues.

Duties:
Maintains the systems associated with the management of the object collection as they enter, leave, and are exhibited by the Museum.
Prompt and thorough registration of all new acquisitions to the Museum’s collections to the standards outlined by the museum’s Collections Management Manual including issuance of deeds of gift and IRS 8283 forms, etc.
Maintains a central manual cataloging system for the object and archives collections and serves as system administrator for the digitized collections management system.
Periodic review and updating of Disaster & Recovery Plan.
Manages all national and international incoming and outgoing loans. This includes the evaluation of requests with the appropriate member(s) of the Collections Department, review of facilities reports, arrangements for the packing and shipping of loans, drafting and reviewing contracts related to loans, insurance, and transport of museum objects.
Creates and implements policies such as cataloguing, condition reporting, photographing, and maintaining collections while in storage, transit, and on display.
Annual review of collection insurance and risk management.
Review of legal matters and legislation as it affects collections in matters of copyright, title, tax laws, etc.
Assist in the care and maintenance of collections.
Assist in the installation and maintenance of exhibits.
Supervision and training of interns or volunteers assigned to Registration.
Participation and assistance in the general programs of the Museum.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, American History, or related field.
Minimum two years post-education experience working as a museum registrar.
Thorough knowledge of current professional registration methods and museum practices.
Knowledge and experience in proper handling of a diverse collection of artifacts.
Excellent recordkeeping skills.
Computer competency of Windows platform.
Proficiency in collections management software, Past Perfect 5.0 preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work as part of a team.
Some travel required.

Preferred:
Experience in preparation and installation of professional quality museum exhibits.
Demonstrated knowledge of Past Perfect cataloging software.
Knowledgeable in 19th century U.S. social and military history with a working knowledge of the American Civil War.
Familiarity with the cleaning, stabilization, and preservation of artifacts that do not require specialist’s treatment.
Working knowledge of digital imaging.
