The Center is seeking a Curatorial/Museum Specialist (Assistant Registrar) to manage The Richard Avedon Archive, which is on long-term loan from the Richard Avedon Foundation. The main function of this position is to provide access to artwork, archive materials, and information about the collection to the Foundation while maintaining a good working relationship with both institutions. This position requires thorough knowledge of professionally accepted collection management practices and procedures including: fine art handling, archival storage, packing and shipping methods and arrangements, and condition report terminology for gelatin silver prints.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Communicate effectively with Avedon Foundation staff to establish priorities, keep them apprised of progress and support a positive working relationship between and with both institutions.
• Handle artwork and archive material in accordance with established art museum guidelines and standards, including: over-sized photographs, rolling and unrolling over-sized photographs, un-mounted photographs, mounted photographs, delicate archive objects, moving crates, and transporting artwork within the building.
• Collaborate with Center staff to provide art museum quality housing and storage.
• Determine the most appropriate way to pack artwork and archive objects for domestic and international shipments. Execute packing or collaborate on crate design with vendors and/or Center preparation staff.
• Make domestic and international shipping arrangements with art handling companies and customs agents.
• Coordinate schedule with colleagues at both the Center and the Avedon Foundation. Create packing lists, receipts, and all associated documentation for the shipment.
• Process incoming shipments of collection materials: unpacking, unframing if necessary, condition reporting, retu,rning to permanent locations, creating receipts, tracking locations.
Visually examine artwork and archive objects, create condition reports utilizing art museum accepted terminology for gelatin silver prints, or archive material. Select the best photographs from editions for exhibition or sale according to prescribed criteria.
• Track locations and update condition reports in the collection management database, Artbase. Conduct periodic inventories and catalog artwork according to Avedon Foundation standards.
• Identify, uphold, and communicate the issues surrounding copyright, privacy, and confidentiality regarding the Avedon Archive.
• Collaborate with Volkerding Study Center staff as necessary to provide access to the collection for researchers by pulling artwork and archive materials and providing oversight.
• Act as a courier as needed, both domestically and internationally.
• Supervise the work of student workers and temporary positions as required.
• Additional duties may be assigned.

RequirementsArizona Board of Regents (ABOR) Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Art or related field and one year of museum curatorial and/or registration experience; OR, five years of museum curatorial and/or registration experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.
In addition to ABOR minimum qualifications above:
• Three years of collections management and/or registration experience.
• Individual will be required to travel outside of the United States with the collection.
