The Folger Shakespeare Library, located in Washington D.C., seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative Exhibitions Project Manager to monitor the installation, deinstallation, and management of all planned Folger exhibitions through 2021. Reporting to the J. Franklin Mowery Head of Conservation and Preservation, the Exhibitions Project Manager serves as the central point of contact for all Folger departments on exhibitions, and works closely with internal and external exhibition curators, conservation and preservation teams, vendors, and a variety of staff from across the institution, to ensure exhibitions are accessible, engaging, and meet the Folger mission.

Under the supervision of the Head of Conservation and Preservation, the Exhibitions Project Manager ensures the smooth operation of the exhibitions process for a single gallery, including: the creation of detailed exhibition installation and deinstallation schedules and budgets, in coordination with the curator(s) and conservation team; development of all gallery graphics and digital media installations; bidding and delivery process for outsourced tasks; layout and planning activities; and ensuring the exhibition process stays on track and on budget. In addition, the Exhibitions Project Manager will perform registration duties for incoming and outgoing loaned items, including: managing the exhibition and traveling loan procedures; coordinating the exhibitions loan schedule; managing and completing loan documentation; consulting with conservation on condition reporting and photo documentation; and ensuring safe handling and return of loaned materials. This individual will also participate in climate control monitoring, consult with Conservation and Facilities teams on climate control issues, and assist with recording light levels on displayed items. The Exhibitions Project Manager will work with the education department and designated exhibitions curators on family programming and docent orientation for each exhibition, and will collaborate with public relations on advertisement. This is a full-time position with a generous benefits package. Primary work days Monday through Friday, with Saturday duty on a rotational basis. During the installation and deinstallation process, the Exhibitions Project Manager will work weekends and late hours. Some travel is required.



RequirementsApplicants for this role must have a B.A., with an M.A. in Museum Studies or related professional experience strongly preferred. A minimum of three years' experience in a similar position is required. Experience with exhibitions in a rare materials library or similar environment, in addition to familiarity with art and rare materials handling, are necessary. Training specific to the Folger collection will be provided. Experience with and knowledge of standard loan and registration practices preferred, including experience with government regulations, international regulations, and legal requirements related to collections. Excellent administrative, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are required, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office suite. Must be able to prioritize, meet deadlines, take direction well, produce accurate and detailed work, and work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative group. This role requires the ability to lift up to 30 pounds, handle fragile items with great care, and push fully loaded book carts. Extensive background checks are required of the selected candidate.
